He told almost no one, had a civilian doctor tape him up, and used a sawed-off broomstick (improvised by engineer Jack Ridley) to close the hatch with his good arm. Then he went up and flew the profile anyway. The “sound barrier” turned out to be a solvable engineering and control problem, not a hard limit.
