I worry we’re becoming very good at consuming information and very bad at actually reading. There’s a difference. Feeds give you fragments. AI gives you answers. Books make you stay with an argument long enough to understand how it was built. That feels more important now, not less. I use AI constantly. But I don’t want it to replace reading. I want it to make me a better reader-more curious, more critical, and more willing to challenge what I think I know. In an age of instant answers, sustained attention may become a competitive advantage. Read books.

well put. reading trains u to sit with an argument long enough to actually think, ai just hands u the conclusion and skips the part that builds the muscle

Well, we’ll put back at you. Not to be glib, I feel the decline in readership is a silent crisis.

The amount of focused knowledge I get from a single book is not comparable with 100s of hours of internet information here and there.

true, but consuming info quickly can also spark deeper curiosity to read more

Sure. Let’s encourage more sparks? I had a “luminary” founder tell me, “I’m too busy for books or any long form, and I only listen to podcast at 1.75x. I asked, ‘so you know everything you need to know?’ Pissed him off. Then I declined his recruitment.

Well before AI era, reading might not be in a prominent position. there’s many other entertainment things like audios, videos and movies. Currently AI has made the situation even worse. It has summaries features which could make ppl even less reading books unfortunately.

Focus is the cognitive infrastructure of thinking. My mother used to say, "Stephen, you have the attention span of a gnat.” 🦟
