During the 2013 shutdown, I waited outside the speaker’s lobby bathroom for at least 20 mins for Rep. Jon Runyan — a 6’7”, former NFL lineman.
When he emerged, realizing I had just waited for him outside the bathroom the entire time, there was a quiet acknowledgement of ‘alright, yeah, I should probably answer your questions before you tweet that I just took a shit for a half-hour.’

Because the easiest way to disrupt satellite service is to attack the ground segment. ISLs allow Starlink to route the service to distant gateways, but quality of service degrades.
NEW: 🇵🇱 A fire broke out at a Starlink ground station in Poland, in Wola Krobowska, Mazovia, with firefighters reportedly treating it as arson.
The fire damaged the station’s power supply infrastructure, while a power generator was also damaged. Police took over the scene, with Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) and Central Police Bureau of Investigation (CBŚP) also notified.
The station is operated by Exatel, Poland’s state-owned telecommunications company. The infrastructure at the site is used to transmit internet traffic across Poland and to Ukraine, and it also supports SpaceX systems providing connectivity through Starlink terminals.
Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said there are indications that this could be another element of hybrid warfare and a deliberate attempt to disrupt an important internet hub.
He stressed that it is too early to say who was responsible, but said the incident fits a broader pattern of sabotage threats against critical infrastructure.
The fire was extinguished and services are investigating the circumstances

I wish cancer to be cured next week!
But CS folks should note AI impact in closed, formal and verifiable domains like math and software do not generalize to empirical, complex domains without full domain knowledge, like medicine.
Meanwhile, signals of what’s useful are eroding.
This makes no coherent sense. It is possible that getting too much knowledge too quickly would change the work of scientists and mathematicians, but it will not harm society in any obvious way. Sure, if all cancer was cured next week, cancer researchers would need to find something else to do, but this is not a problem for anyone else.

UPDATE: An Amtrak construction crew accidentally cut into a fiber line in New Jersey which caused a telecom outage and forced FAA to pause flights in the Northeast.
Right now:
- Flights are resuming at LGA and PHL
- Flights into EWR, JFK, and Teterboro Airport are paused
This incident underscores the need for additional funding to modernize aging infrastructure and prevent disruptions like this in the future.

Amtrak and NJ Transit stated the cable was cut by a NJ Transit contractor on their property, not an Amtrak crew. The outage started with failure of an aging primary circuit; the cut affected only the backup line.

Neutron operations are busy on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Our Hungry Hippo fairing has wrapped up pre-flight testing at our Assembly and Integration Complex while down the road at Launch Complex 3, we've completed installation of the ~10m test stand for Neutron's second stage. Neutron's thrust module will be directly tested on the launch mount itself, to verify rocket-to-launch mount interfaces ahead of full vehicle tests on the pad.
