Digital identity is in the news rather a lot lately. It's an interesting issue. I don't mind the idea of a digital ID, but I really don't trust any government to run it. Digital identities need to be sovereign to the individual and they need to be secure. Gov IDs are neither.

Wow. Incoming, massive class action lawsuit against Anthropic for copyright breach on the material used to train their AI system. There is a way to settle this. The AI industry has been in a race condition, and anyone who stopped to sort out the legalities of content licensing was going to lose. Copyright law is still a thing though, so they have to come in from the cold eventually. Part of the problem has been that there have not been good solutions to (a) content provenance on the copyrighted material (i.e., proof of ownership), (b) secure copyright licensing methods, and (c) a system for fee free micropayments. Also, just to make this interesting, a system that does this also has to be super secure, because it is going to need to face the tempest of attacks by people with access to advanced quantum computers. My group is bringing such a system to market. It is digital commerce meets state-of-the-art encryption technology. It can be used to build a secure content rights management platform, and handle the flow of microroyalties to all content owners (not just the big ones, but all the little ones too). The AI industry will eventually come to understand that paying people for access to their content is great business (and not paying them is profoundly annoying, and quite possibly illegal). We're already at the point where AI's have trained on pretty much all digital content ever created. The only thing left is new human input. If the content creators are not getting paid they won't (willingly) share content for further training. If they are, they will, and that will create a huge advantage for the AI companies that do. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/…
