May 3, 2012 Zabul Province, Afghanistan. SGT. Joseph Stout was with 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division when an Afghan unit came under heavy Taliban attack. The Afghan soldiers were taking casualties and losing ground. Stout and three other American Soldiers went in. What followed was a nine hour fight. Stout moved through dense vegetation under enemy fire, helping rally the Afghan soldiers and coordinate the fight. Once he advanced within hand grenade range of the Taliban positions, SGT. Stout identified and marked enemy locations so American attack helicopters could engage them while avoiding nearby civilians. Stout stayed forward, helping the Afghan force regain the initiative and evacuate its wounded. For his actions, Sgt. Joseph Stout received the Army Commendation Medal with Valor.

This morning worked out good for us. Now I get to go clean them.

Finally heading home. This was by far one of the slowest days at work I've had in awhile. Watched two movies and read a book.

The manual made it look easy. In 1974, Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 5th SFG took rubber boats onto Mott Lake at Fort Bragg to practice boarding a U-10A Super Courier floatplane. There was one immediate problem. Even at idle, the airplane moved at about 6–7 mph. The men had to paddle hard enough to stay alongside, then climb from a bobbing rubber boat onto the aircraft’s floats and into the cabin. That was in shorts, T-shirts, and tennis shoes. They hadn’t added weapons, radios, or rucksacks yet. The exercise exposed how much work separated a capability described in a field manual from one a team could actually use. The humility Chris Cunningham displayed here is typical of all the guys who were on that mountain. I remember when they got back (only Aco of 1/75 was deployed for that first rotation). They didn’t want to talk about it, and nobody wanted to ask them about it. Over twenty-four years later, I want each of them to know that every one of us who wasn’t on that mountain that day has nothing but the most profound respect and admiration for those Rangers and what they did. They exemplified every line of the Ranger Creed in an extremely difficult and dire situation. They probably won’t believe it or want to take credit, but their actions that day and their relentlessness to achieve the mission and never leave a fallen comrade set the example for others to follow. Destined Company, 2-503IN!!! We shot over 100 TOW missiles during OEF VIII (2007-2008). The soldiers got so good that the Taliban started referring to them as the finger of God. Often times, my soldiers would shoot them across rivers and into windows. Essentially redesigning how the system was used in combat.
