A young plebe, trying to survive my first year at West Point, the opportunity to meet Coach Knight was a day I’ll never forget. He was larger than life. “Don’t you dare feel sorry for yourself here, give this place hell” he said. RIP to a legendary figure.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chris Spatola. Chris was a beloved Army veteran, coach, broadcaster, and true friend to the Duke Basketball family. We send our love and condolences to his wife Jamie and three children, the Spatola and Krzyzewski families, and everyone who loved him.

Time I never knew I’d have. And may never get again. Thoughts from a dad:

Spatola was the absolute best. He was someone I looked up to. Brilliant, funny and great view of the world. He was a joy to be around. He was a hooper at the West Point on 9/11. A family man and a hero.

Devastated to hear the news of the loss of Chris Spatola. Brilliant, funny, dedicated to his family, hoops and his crafts of coaching and broadcasting. My prayers are with his beautiful family. I’ll remember him like this-coming out of practice-fired up for a game.

Getting the phone call today on this one stung hard Chris was an exceptional man, husband, and father. As an Army officer, he served his country proudly in support of OIF. As a basketball player, he is Army’s 5th all time leading scorer and more importantly was a great leader. As a coach, he counts a national championship and gold medal as accomplishments. As an analyst, he brought unique perspective and energy to the sport he loved. As a person, he led with kindness and humility. He was generous with his time. He represented West Point exceptionally well with his actions. My prayers are with his wife and children as this is a tremendous loss. I pray they can find some solace knowing he left a positive impact on this world and will be missed.
