One of the most inscrutable mysteries of history is why there was no popular revolution against Hitler in 1944 or 1945. (The 20 July 1944/Stauffenberg coup attempt was a top-down effort by conservative and military elites.) Hitler - surely the most popular leader in Europe after the Fall of France - was radically unpopular by 1944; the German people knew the war was doomed; and vast numbers of Germans, including e.g. 12 year old boys Hitler was ordering into battle by the end, were dying in this doomed effort. Why were the German people so passive?
