Former NHL Ref turned rules analyst on ESPN.

Colorado/Montreal
A gentleman who led by example. Learned a lot from him early in my career before he retired as a supervisor. Enjoyed seeing him at The Joe late in my career. May he rest in peace. Condolences to his family.
Former #NHL linesman Matt Pavelich, one of 16 on-ice officials in @HockeyHallFame, died today at 92. 23 seasons 1,727 regular season games 245 playoff games Pavelich worked every Stanley Cup Final from 1961 thru 1979, including 13 Cup clinching games. Incredible hockey life.

Very nice remembrance Dave. I used to get to Madison Square Garden (in the 1970's) 1 hour before game time just to watch the Officials skate alone in the low lamp light of the World Most Famous Arena. I remember him as boisterous as he cut up the ice, loving every moment it. RIP

@ESPNRefNHL - Why is Jamie Benn allowed to cross check people in the back of the head? I’ll hang up & listen. Aldo adding @JonKrawczynski @RussoHockey @JoeSmithNHL @SaadYousuf126 @Lassimak @seanshapiro

I'm not watching, but no player is allowed to x-chk anyone in the back of the head. It either wasn't a x-chk or it was not seen.

@ESPNRefNHL what are we missing here?
Here is the missed game stoppage (High-stick) the Avs challenged, the goal ended up counting after video review

You got it way wrong in the Watertown Wytheville suspensions. The guy who hasn't played a shift in 2 games attacks the leading scorer in the league last year and you give him a 2 game suspension. You are better than that respectfully.

With all due respect, there is a lot more at play behind the scenes you are not privy to. This is ongoing....

Do you agree with the length of this review and others that have happened? I feel like if you can’t blatantly see evidence to overturn a call within a minute or looking at multiple replays, clearly at best it’s inconclusive. I think there should be a time limit for review.

I'm sorry, I wasn't watching the game. That clip is my only frame of reference. I hate long reviews but presently, their mandate is to get the call right. It would take a rule change, agreed to by the NHLPA and teams/GMs to place a time limit on the length of time permitted.

If this is the only view they had, this review should have taken 5 seconds as you can’t even see the contact point of puck to stick. So I’m curious if they had others or if they were trying to guesstimate based on this when it should have been instantly inconclusive.

They definitely have multiple views and I'm sure they searched them all for the best angle. High stick is tough b/c unless it's video from ice level, it's difficult to ascertain the height/angle of stick in relation to the shoulders.

Are you watching the Avs/Bolts game? If so, how is it possible LOC is the only penalty? That's terrible @ESPNRefNHL

@ESPNRefNHL Dave Jackson still paying those referees union dues with that call on the penalty shot.

@ESPNRefNHL how is that called on Dobes in OT? Contact in his crease with a skater. Skater has no reason to enter the crease but to make that call in OT is absurd.
3

It was the puck entering the Montreal zone immediately preceding the penalty in OT. So penalty 10-15 seconds before that penalty call. You see Hutson wondering why it wasn’t an icing.

Yep, prob shoulda been icing. I think he felt that Mtl player stopped skating

Did you watch the non call on icing? Or can explain how it wasn’t an icing? That’s my question, I’m not looking to blame the officials. I’m looking to understand because with only 6 skaters on the ice (plus goalies) a lot less players and action to officiate.

Immediately prior to penalty?

I did not. Approx what time? I'll try to find it.

They did. That doesn’t mean the calls in OT were correct. The icing call looks like a complete miss. The penalty on Dobes is not worthy in OT and wouldn’t have occurred if the icing was called.

A lot of things happen in a hockey game but blaming the refs for the loss when the game never should have got to OT is choosing to go after the low-hanging fruit. I'm sure that SJ fans could point to some random injustice that occurred during 60 min of hockey as well.
