The next time someone tells you that 'U.S. election results are accurate because there are audits', remind them that election audits were NEVER DESIGNED to detect manipulation or ensure the accuracy of an election. That's not & has never been the function of an election audit.🧵

A clean audit of a narrow set of voting machines, or even voting locations, also doesn’t mean tampering couldn’t have happened elsewhere in the process, whether at machines or precincts outside the sample, or at other stages in how results get aggregated and transmitted.

This is deeply concerning. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has sent observers to monitor every U.S. federal election for two decades. Governors need to pick up the phone and ask if an invitation from leaders of states can fill that federal gap.

(The ETA has emailed the OSCE directly to ask if invitations from Governors would be sufficient to allow observers to participate in the 2026 Midterms -- but Governors and Secretaries of State reaching out directly will have more sway and impact. We strongly urge them to do so.)

Reality: REALITY: Recounts and audits are different procedures that answer different questions. A recount repeats the counting of ballots—typically all cast votes—to verify whether the recount matches the reported result. An audit examines a sample of votes, machines, or polling places to test whether hand counts match machine or cast-vote records, verifying the process, not the result itself. Recount rules vary widely by state: 41 states and D.C. allow requested recounts under certain conditions, while nine do not.
