De-icing is so satisfying.

Three people died when an R22 and a H125 crashed into each other in the air near McMinnville, Oregon, yesterday. They were two students and a flight instructor. Even in a mid-air collision, it is important to investigate how maintenance was performed before both helicopters left the ground. Even if maintenance is not the cause (and officials have not stated that it is), it must be ruled out. They should check the controls, the rotors, and the radios, and review the maintenance logs to see what work was done and who signed it.

An Alaska 737-800 was leaving Portland. After takeoff, the crew noticed a "dirty socks" smell in the back of the cabin, and one flight attendant developed a headache. They continued to Burbank anyway. Crew usually call it "dirty socks" when oil or hydraulic fluid leaks into the bleed air; sometimes it is just a wet air-conditioning pack or moldy ducts. The headache is what makes people pay attention, but until they open the packs and the APU and inspect the oil system as required, that smell is pretty much the only thing they have to go on.

Most people expect a slat to come out from the top of the wing. Kruger flaps do it differently. These high-lift devices swing out from underneath the wing’s leading edge. Watch closely and you can see the five actuators and linkages move the panels from completely flush to fully extended. The upper wing surface stays clean during cruise, helping reduce drag. Classic Boeing engineering.

"God bless you" on the fuselage, and the aircraft is already moving off stand. Strange how a livery can change how the ramp feels about a departure.

An Asia One Air’s aircraft lost its left main landing gear on touchdown at Indonesia, on 24 October. The aircraft ran off the runway into an embankment and two people were injured. The 208B plane uses a simple spring-steel main gear leg with no oleo strut (it’s designed to flex and absorb the landing loads). When one of those legs folds, I’d want a good look at the leg itself, the fuselage attach fittings, and the hard landing and inspection history before anyone decides the landing was the only cause.

Etihad Engineering has just started its own CAR 147 program in Abu Dhabi. The MRO is training its own engineers instead of waiting to hire them from elsewhere. The shortage was never aircraft but people: people who can sign a CRS, and you cannot buy those off a shelf. They have to be built, and it takes years of structured training to produce.

The 787 entered service about 3 years late because it changed so much at once: composite airframe, no bleed air for the cabin, electric compressors, lithium-ion batteries etc. A year after this flight, the Takamatsu emergency landing due to a battery fault grounded the whole fleet. Launch customer, first to find the weak point.

A 737-800 puts over 10 tonnes on each main tire, at about 200 psi. That's the load a taxiway has to carry on a patch of rubber the size of a doormat. China Airlines B-18665 at Bangkok had one main wheel sink into the pavement and the aircraft stopped where it was. Whether the failure was the pavement or the gear, a tug and a tow bar won't fix it. Someone has to jack it, and the ground has to be made good first.

If you were there when they needed someone but nowhere to be found when you needed them, you got the message.

Insane final approach! At this height, I’m not sure if he’s cleared to land or cleared to use the road. St. Barts.
