I'll write it in my own words later, but I really cannot stress enough that everyone should read "black against empire" and its conclusion. The simplistic "BPP failed because of COINTELPRO" just does not really hold up under close examination. There's a lot here, but please read.

The actual lazy reading is yours. They didn't lose allies because of repression, they lost allies because the overlapping crises that gave them allies were overcome over time.
The "loss of allies" is still state counterinsurgency especially since the state worked to sever every international relationship black radicals ever had.
