The EAC is an environmental charity in Mi'kma'ki / Nova Scotia taking leadership on critical issues from biodiversity to climate change to environmental justice
We're officially leaving Twitter to nurture deeper environmental dialogue on Bluesky & Threads. The best change starts offline - take time away from screens and reconnect with the earth!

Text reads "Let's be real: burning biomass is not a climate solution.
No more Bull (poop emoji)
Nova Scotians didn't ask for biomass.
ALT White and green text overlaid on an image of a clearcut forest.
Text reads: "The reality: Burning biomass is one of the most expensive and least efficient ways to generate power. For every 100 trees burned, 80 are wasted as heat. Right now, it makes up only 3% of N.S. power generation - but the Houston government wants more. And that means bad things for our forests and our climate!"

Text reads: "The costs to our forests: Biomass burning risks encouraging clearcuts that strip away carbon storage and wildlife habitat. Loss of flood, wildfire and drought protection. Soil degradation that releases even more carbon. We can’t afford to keep cutting down Nova Scotia’s forests for short-term energy."

Text reads: “The bigger problem: Every dollar spent on biomass is a dollar not spent on real climate solutions like wind, solar, battery storage & high-efficiency heating. Increasing biomass burning for energy locks N.S. into outdated, carbon heavy energy."

Text reads: "What can we do with (actual) waste wood, instead of burning it? Genuine leftovers from sustainable sawmill practices can be used to make long-lasting manufactured products, like insulation for homes, pressboard for construction or biochar for agriculture. And in a specific few cases, we can burn it: in modern woodstoves in people’s homes, and to heat a single building or district, with efficiency rates of 90 per cent of higher. But no matter what, if biomass is burned, the carbon must be counted."

Text reads: "The good news: Biomass is still small enough to stop now. We can replace it with cleaner, cheaper and more sustainable options - without risking jobs or energy reliability."

Text reads: "how to fight back: Sign the petition calling on the province to reverse legislation that will increase biomass burning. Talk to your friends and neighbours. Learn the facts. Share this series. Contact your elected officials"
Biomass myths, busted:
🌳 Not cheap: it's the most expensive way to make electricity in N.S.
🌳 Not carbon neutral: emissions aren’t even counted
🌳 Not efficient: 80% of the energy is wasted as heat

Burning biomass for electricity is NOT a climate solution and it’s destroying our forests, raising emissions and driving up power bills.
This isn’t climate action. It’s forest liquidation in disguise.

We need to move toward truly sustainable forestry practices that help keep diverse ecosystems intact - and large-scale biomass burning isn't going to get us there. 2/2
But let's be clear: clearcutting a forest and leaving the non-target species there to dry up and create further fire risk isn't good either (obviously). The issue is that we don't want to be incentivizing clearcutting at all... 1/2
It’s no secret: Nova Scotia’s wetlands are threatened. Climate Change. Overdevelopment. Gaps in protections.
Every voice matters. Every wetland matters. Let’s make sure wetlands are protected for current and future generations.

Nova Scotia’s biomass problem was no accident – it was greenlit by government despite expert warnings. No proper regulations. No oversight. Just insane amounts of carbon and higher power bills.
We deserve real renewables – not this.

Wetlands help us build + maintain resilient communities.
They can:
✅ Absorb floodwaters
✅ Buffer wind + wave energy during storms
✅ Filter + purify water
✅ Act as natural firebreak during a wildfire
✅ Support birds, fish & wildlife

The N.S. gov’t is pushing “strong mayor” laws that centralize power, weaken democracy & put communities at risk. We need local decision making – not a system vulnerable to political interference.
Keep the “know” in Nova Scotia: ecologyaction.ca/our-work/po…#NSPoli#StrongMayor
“Strong mayor” laws give too much power to one person.
This system hasn't sped up housing in Ontario, but it has silenced communities & weakened democracy.
We need a strong democracy, not a puppet mayor.

The Houston gov lifted the fracking ban.
❌ No public mandate
❌ No consultation
❌ No support
We already said no, and we’re saying it again.
