Building high-mix high-volume future with robots and AI @machinalabs_

(1/9) @MachinaLabs_, we're working on full automation in manufacturing through our 'Robocraftsman' technology—robotic cells designed to turn design intent directly into physical products. This concept is akin to the shift in the digital world, where cloud computing allowed software developers to focus on creation without the constraints of physical infrastructure. That shift enabled the rapid expansion we see today, notably the rise of artificial intelligence and AGI on the horizon. To enable the same rapid speed of innovation in physical world, our team is building a similar abstraction layer in manufacturing, making it as effortless to produce a new product as it is to launch a web service. Initially, I was reserved about sharing the details from our internal all-hands, as they capture the core of Machina’s ambitious goals. However, I realized the value of opening up our vision to the wider community. We’re on a mission to transform manufacturing, and it’s a journey that extends beyond just one company. We invite entrepreneurs and innovators to join us in reshaping this fundamental human expression, manufacturing.

.@PeterDiamandis it would be really cool to have an @xprize for manufacturing. I would focus on two metrics, speed to get to first part with very high complexity. Ability to scale. This will pave the way to manufacture in space which I know you care about a lot.

We have hit a new stage at Machina. We have started transitioning from a technology company that builds Robocraftsman to a company that operates large factories with many Robocraftsmen running in parallel to serve our customers at scale.

70% of weapons-system spending goes to sustaining what we already have. Just 30% goes to what’s next. Yet everyone talks about the 30%. Wars are fought with the fleet you have, not the PowerPoint you want. Machina repairs legacy aircraft 10× faster.

Machina is becoming the fastest manufacturing partner for complex metal structures. We’re reinventing manufacturing from the ground up so you can have your cake, eat it too. Building fast shouldn’t mean making simple things.
The next generation of manufacturing should enable speed without sacrificing complexity.   Machina is reinventing metal manufacturing so innovators can build complex products orders of magnitude faster.    In order to do that, we had to reinvent the process itself. The world’s most complex physical structures cannot be built by solving one manufacturing step at a time. You have to own the entire manufacturing problem and the advanced processes required to solve it.   Machina’s factories brings proprietary forming, trimming, drilling, scanning, welding, inspection, and assembly together in one software-defined production system, the RoboCraftsman. The result is a complete path from digital design to production-grade parts, complex assemblies, and certain fully-formed products.   Machina’s factories are already producing hardware for crewed aircraft, UAVs, fuel tanks, missile systems, and customized vehicles. One platform, unlimited products. Built on flexible infrastructure for programs where requirements evolve quickly or conventional manufacturing is constrained by rigidity and economics.   Noelle Medina from The Hustle visited two of our factories in Los Angeles to see the RoboCraftsman system in action and explore what is possible when the factory is built around AI and robotics from the ground up – not layered onto legacy manufacturing processes.   One platform. An extraordinary range of complex structures. And soon, our largest factory yet will come online. Video in the comment

AI is the latest and ultimate form for tyranny of the majority. That’s where the humen can still separate themselves. Until AI diversifies. Then we’ll have to find another way to stay uniquely human.

Forget all the fear about AI. Make the robots sentient so you can finally go back to the gym and remember what your muscles were for. Good old-fashioned human labor. Also don’t forget your legs.

Image there was a software you put in requirement for a drone and it would design it and then on-demand in any location you would be able to make it with Robocraftsman. Cost effectively, right design, right material…

This is why distributed manufacturing matters. It’s a strategic advantage, especially when you have real allies, not complicated situationships like Iran or Russia or China. Our allies should stand up on-demand manufacturing for defense products wherever they’re needed.
BREAKING: It has now been reported that Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics formally requested that Russia sell Geran-2 and other one-way attack drones to Iran after Iranian drone-production facilities were devastated by Israeli and U.S. strikes during the war. In a striking reversal, Iran is now seeking Russian-built derivatives of the Iranian-designed Shahed-136, which Tehran originally supplied to Russia. So far, Russia has refused Iran’s request to supply these drones for use against U.S. forces during the recent war.

.@fabworks_guy came for a visit and delivering parts that all the usual suspects refused to manufacture. fabworks was the only company who did it! We returned the favor with a gift. Computer generated design Roboformed! It’s great to have Jonathan and team in the LA neighborhood
Proud owner of some roboformed metal. Thanks @EdwardMehr for showing me around. Let’s see if the wife lets me hang this in the house.

The same investors who passed on SpaceX and Tesla for defying consensus now fund “the next SpaceX or Tesla” because that’s the consensus.

Additional footage of tonight's massive Iranian ballistic missile attack on Muwaffaq Salti Airbase in Jordan via @kimhvik2. More than 60 PATRIOT interceptors were fired. Multiple Iranian cluster-munition MRBMs can be seen incoming.

While you’re at it, I hear Anthropic has a whole team turning prompts into advanced hardware designs. No idea if that’s true, but Sam, probably worth making sure they don’t beat you to it ;)

3D printing completed the full hype cycle: Then: Companies didn’t need it. Used it. Bragged about it. Now: Need it. Use it. Critical about it. I still think 3DP hasn’t yet met its full potential.
Replying to @lizardmech @yishan
3D printing allowed us to integrate secondary flow paths into the primary components. However, I would not recommend 3D printing for volume manufacturing. It is too slow and expensive.

Human brain: ~86B neurons Kimi K3: ~104B active params/token Human brain: ~100–500T synapses Kimi K3: ~2.8T total only params Remind me again why I feel like the models out there have more brain capacity than I do? Shame on me. The hardware is clearly not the bottleneck. 😂
