This 200 year old sculpture of the Virgin and Child is so special. Louis XIII devoted himself and his kingdom to Mary at a time when he was struggling to father an heir. In 1638, he made a royal vow consecrating himself, his subjects, and the kingdom of France to the Virgin Mary. Shortly after, an heir was born: the future Sun King, Louis XIV, one of the greatest kings of France. Since then, Mary has been considered the principal patroness of France. Maybe it’s all a coincidence, but it’s hard to deny the connection. This hollow silver sculpture is housed in the treasury of Notre-Dame Cathedral and is brought out on August 14, the eve of the Feast of the Assumption on August 15.

France is a very special country. In Chinese, its name translates as «Land of the Law». It is a blessed land, one that has given birth to so many saints and is home to some of the most wondrous art and architecture in the world. I will forever carry France in my heart. It is the country that forged so much of what is good in me, through the wonderful French people I had the privilege of meeting. So many of them carry a very special light, and I feel deeply grateful that France was once my home. I lived in so many blessed places there, with absolutely incredible history and a lot is of course tied to the sincere faith of its people and Kings.

Phenomenal NYC sunset tonight

I first tried smoking in Germany. I can’t recall exactly how old I was, but we got a pack from one of those vending machines. I think my girlfriend got it and we tried it together at age 12-13? She was the one who instigated it. I doubt she’s a smoker now, but I’m not either. Alcohol was also super accessible back then. You didn’t have to show ID. I remember buying a «Kleiner Feigling», a fig liqueur, on a school trip in Germany when I was around 13 or 14. Being forbidden from doing things like smoking or drinking alcohol didn’t turn me into a practitioner of either.
