Setting Standards: Quality engineering education starts long before the first class.
The EBK Engineering Accreditation Committee is at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology for a two-day training of lecturers, university staff and top management. The training supports the move of the Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme to Tier I (Washington Accord-aligned) accreditation. At the centre of the training is Outcome-Based Education (OBE).
Here is why it matters:
• It starts with the end in mind. OBE first defines what a graduate engineer must be able to do, then designs every course, lab and assessment to get them there.
• It measures what students can demonstrate, not just what was taught.
• It builds in continuous improvement, so the programme gets better with every cohort.
• It aligns Kenyan programmes with the Washington Accord graduate attributes, the global benchmark for engineering education, as Kenya works towards Full Signatory status.
At this stage, the Board’s focus is on building the School’s own capacity, starting with the University’s leadership. Accreditation measures quality; capacity builds it.

The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC) has commenced a training workshop for lecturers and university staff at Zetech University to support the transition of its proposed Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme to Tier I accreditation.
The programme, submitted to the Board earlier this year, represents an opportunity to strengthen Kenya’s pipeline of engineers equipped with the skills, knowledge and competencies required to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving economy.

Manager - Graduate Engineers Internship Program (GEIP) commended @ZetechUni for taking this important step even before commencement of the programme. He noted that the training will strengthen the capacity of lecturers and university staff to implement Washington Accord-aligned Outcome-Based Education (OBE), ensuring that the programme is designed and delivered in line with internationally recognised professional and accreditation standards.

The impact extends beyond accreditation. By embedding quality, innovation and industry-relevant competencies into engineering education, the initiative will contribute to producing globally competitive engineers capable of driving technological advancement, industrial growth and sustainable development in Kenya.
Zetech University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Njenga Munene, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to the journey, noting that the university is intentional about providing quality education that produces globally competitive engineers.
The engagement also contributes to Kenya’s broader ambition of attaining Full Signatory Status to the Washington Accord by 2029, following the country’s achievement of Provisional Signatory Status in June 2025. Tier I accreditation provides the outcomes-based benchmark against which engineering programmes are assessed under the Accord.
As EBK continues working with universities across the country, these partnerships remain critical to strengthening engineering education, enhancing graduate mobility and ensuring that Kenya’s engineers are prepared to compete and contribute on the global stage.

Partnerships & Collaborations: As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with key stakeholders in the regulatory sector, the Engineers Board today paid a courtesy visit to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The EBK delegation, led by Acting Registrar/CEO, Eng. Grace Onyango and accompanied by Eng. Antony Okere, Director, Compliance, Standards and Enforcement, and other staff members held discussions with Dr. Eng. Joseph Oketch, Acting Director General of EPRA and other senior EPRA officials.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the two institutions to explore areas of collaboration, including capacity building, stakeholder engagement, Graduate Engineers Internships, regulatory compliance and continuous professional development.

EBK Engages Higher Education on Advancing Engineering Education Standards
The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) paid a courtesy call on the Principal Secretary, State Department for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, to provide an update on the status of engineering education in Kenya and the progress towards achieving Full Signatory Status to the Washington Accord.
During the engagement, Ag. Registrar/CEO, Eng. Grace Onyango, briefed the Principal Secretary on key developments, including:
✅Recognition of 78 engineering programmes across 18 universities, in collaboration with the Commission for University Education (CUE).
✅EBK’s ambition to achieve Full Signatory Status to the Washington Accord by 2028, as Kenya advances towards internationally benchmarked engineering education standards.
✅Capacity building of university lecturers and universities to support the transition towards internationally benchmarked engineering education.
✅Findings from a gap analysis, which identified strengths in quality assurance and curriculum structures, alongside areas requiring greater attention, including industry engagement, facilities and staffing.
The engagement also highlighted the importance of strengthening engineering institutions and positioning them as centres of excellence, while sustaining the reforms necessary to meet international standards.
The Principal Secretary commended the progress made and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the Board’s efforts to strengthen engineering education and advance Kenya’s journey towards global recognition.

EBK and KRB Explore Collaboration on Engineering Capacity and Road Infrastructure Standards
The Kenya Roads Board (@KRB_Kenya) hosted the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) during a courtesy call by Ag. Registrar/CEO, Eng. Grace Onyango, to the Director General, KRB, Judith Otsyula.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the two institutions to explore areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening engineering capacity, professionalism and quality infrastructure delivery in the roads sector.
Discussions focused on developing tailor-made capacity-building programmes for engineers at KRB, with a particular focus on road maintenance, works contracts, price adjustment, technical audits and other areas relevant to their roles. The proposed programmes are intended to strengthen professional capacity and enhance the value engineers bring to road-sector planning, implementation and oversight.
The discussions also recognised the need to enhance the understanding of non-engineering staff who work closely with engineers, particularly on areas such as contracts and technical audits, to promote more effective collaboration and decision-making.
The two institutions further explored opportunities for joint capacity building and the development of standards for road maintenance, with a view to promoting consistency, quality and professionalism in the sector.

EBK Strengthens Compliance with National Values and Principles of Governance
In adhering to Article 234(2)(h) of the Constitution of Kenya, Section 16 of the Public Service (Values and Principles) Act, 2015, and Section 63 of the Public Service Commission Act, the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) conducted a three-day reporting exercise to review, validate, and consolidate information for its compliance report.
The exercise brought together various departments of the Board who compiled relevant information with supporting evidence on the Board’s implementation of the constitutional values and principles of governance, including accountability, transparency, integrity, professionalism, inclusiveness, responsiveness, and effective service delivery.
Through this exercise, EBK continues to strengthen institutional accountability, uphold good governance, and ensure that its operations and service delivery remain aligned with constitutional and public service requirements.

What if less than 1% of a project budget goes towards safety?
Speaking at the 5th Annual ACEK Conference, EBK Registrar/CEO Eng. Grace Onyango, highlighted the urgent need to strengthen skills, safety culture and professional capacity across Kenya’s construction industry.
Quoting an EBK–Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety Services (DOSH) analysis covering 46 counties, she noted that 449 accidents were reported in civil & engineering works, while 462 were recorded in construction & building.
She further highlighted the skills gaps, with legal & regulatory compliance, occupational health & hygiene, and first aid & emergency procedures among the top training needs identified.
Safe projects start with skilled people.

Professional Engagements: We were honoured to host Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Roads & Transport @davis_chirchir at the @EngineersBoard exhibition stand during the opening of the ongoing 5th Annual Conference of the @ACEK1968 2026.
The CS was accompanied by Principal Secretary, @Roads_KE Eng. Joseph Mbugua, and were apprised of the Board’s achievements, ongoing initiatives and plans to strengthen engineering regulation and professional development in Kenya. @OkereAMakokha, Director, Compliance & Enforcement @EngineersBoard highlighted the Ministry’s significance as a key partner in advancing the Board’s mandate and initiatives aligned with the Government’s development agenda.
This year’s conference is themed “Engineering Transformation: Scaling Green Growth, Smart Infrastructure and Resilient Futures.”
