2/2 – especially during drought. Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly saw 72% of its average rainfall in August, normal for this time of year. But the ground remained drier than typical and average water flows ranged from exceptionally low to below normal across the area.

(1) A bright blue substance was reported in Littleham Brook, Exmouth. We attended and found no visible environmental impacts, but issued an advice against bathing as a precaution. Overnight it was traced to an industrial source, but it has stopped.

It is not linked to the sewage network. The pollutant is still moving downstream and is likely to reach the bathing water this afternoon. We’re awaiting toxicity information, so the advice against bathing on Swimfo remains. We’ll review again later and lift it when safe.

Last year, this site in #Bognor Regis was covered in waste which our enforcement team identified was incorrectly stored. We have been working to oversee the clearance of the site, and this work is now complete. Photos show the scale of the clearance.

The recent rain has been welcome after what the @metoffice has provisionally confirmed as the UK's hottest summer on record. In the last 6 months we received only around 61% of the rainfall we'd normally expect. Thank you to everyone for using water wisely. 💧
