...they asked their smartest AI for a plan to do so, and it came up with some diabolical new idea that *outside experts* could not refute. The plan is so novel that they can't tell is what it is.

Very sorry to see Rep. Mike Gallagher retire. He served as a serious, honorable, and hard-working partner to my former boss Jim Langevin on the Cybserspace Solarium Commission. We need formidable, thoughtful voices on both sides of the aisle.

A politician appealing to our better angels.
In a commencement speech, Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker says that the kindest person in the room is often the smartest. Research supports this. Lower cognitive abilities correlate with bigotry. Cruel leaders who whip up hatred & tribal instincts do not deserve our attention.

I just subscribed to The Permanent Problem brinklindsey.substack.com/?u… because the intro addresses big societal problems. Will he address the Marketplace of Ideas in which people come to a framing of their place in the world?
Excellent exchange here between the eloquent Steve Pinker and incredible Scott Aaronson about the prospects of scaling deep networks to achieve AGI. I worked on NNs in the 1980's, but put me in the camp of the "baby-boom linguistic" types. scottaaronson.blog/?p=6524
Excellent discussion but... Information warfare is based on human cognition. Incredibly ironic then, that throughout the entire interview they had this promo video running in the background to distract attention from the speakers. A little topical awareness would help here.
A VERY useful examination of how the Ukrainians got more than a billion people rooting for them--with a very limited communications budget. #LeadershipMatters #MoralsMatter #Courage #Peace4Ukraine #StratCom

Great conversation with entrepreneur and wifi expert @Jeff_Abramowitz about what AI can do about some big problems in this space. Glad he found this entertaining:
Great (mostly) non-technical explanation on how Alexa works. Check out short video/longer article on conversational agents & robot psychology by former @PARCinc colleague @EricSaund. #conversationalagent bit.ly/RobotPsy youtu.be/VWCaLQPPM2U
