All about Tech, AI, Automation, Programming, GhostBSD, OpenZFS, and Open Source.

I am working on a new desktop named Mocka. The name came from a typo I made while checking whether any projects were already named Mocha. Mocka will replace MATE one component at a time until every part has been replaced. Every component is written from scratch, reverse engineered from how the existing tools behave, and stays compatible with MATE so you can mix both while the transition happens. The first component is Mocka Dock, now in alpha. It's a taskbar-style dock applet for the MATE panel with pinned and running apps, drag-and-drop pinning, per-app right-click menus with desktop actions and recent files, and minimize animations to the app's button. Window thumbnails are the next milestone. Mocka Dock will be available in the next GhostBSD package update and will come preinstalled, but it won't be set as the default yet. Once the update lands, add it to your panel with Add to Panel. If you want to try it sooner, the release notes have build instructions. Release notes and source: github.com/mocka-desktop/moc… Please report bugs on GitHub issues.

Most post-production shops size flash storage to their whole media library, not to what's actually being worked on. Fox's Newman Scoring Stage does it differently: active sessions run on flash, delivered work sits on disk, and OpenZFS checksums and snapshots cover both. See how it's built: truenas.com/case-studies/fox…

VMware's licensing pushed you onto Proxmox. Your storage shouldn't have to make that same forced jump. The new TrueNAS Proxmox Plugin provisions and snapshots TrueNAS-backed VM disks directly. No manual iSCSI LUN management. Learn More: truenas.com/open-storage-for…

A ZFS snapshot can't be altered because of how the filesystem writes data in the first place. ZFS writes every update to new, empty space instead of overwriting the old, so a snapshot's contents can never be edited or overwritten again. That permanence only covers the contents, though. The snapshot itself can still be deleted under normal retention policy, unless someone's placed a Hold on it, which only a Full Administrator can release. For ransomware recovery, that gap is the point: the accounts handling daily snapshot work aren't the accounts that can erase your last copy. Read more - truenas.com/blog/truenas-imm…

QLC benchmarks almost identical to TLC. Then a few months of real writes in, it gets noticeably slower. Nothing broke. That's just the pSLC cache running dry, the trick every drive uses to hide its real write speed until you actually lean on it. Read more - truenas.com/blog/tlc-vs-qlc-…

Storage vendors have told customers to keep ZFS pools under 80% full for over a decade. Most people repeat the rule without knowing why. It comes down to how ZFS handles free space. As a copy-on-write filesystem, it writes new data to open space and releases old blocks after, so free space gets more fragmented as the pool fills. On spinning disks, writes also get pushed to slower inner tracks once the faster outer tracks are used up. The right number depends on the workload. A backup repository of write-once files can run at 95% with no issues. A database or VM host doing constant overwrites can start to slow down before 80%. "What I liked about TrueNAS was that it wasn’t the typical ‘we can do everything’ pitch,” Fröhling, MoovIT founder, says. “It was an understatement. They said, ‘We have a reliable system, try it for yourself.’ MoovIT, a systems integrator and software developer based in Germany, has been supporting major global football tournaments and European football events for 15 years. Their workflow involves assets moving in all directions between editors, broadcasters, sponsors, and rights holders. Throughout this flow, speed, capacity, and reliability are paramount. MoovIT first deployed TrueNAS systems during a major global football tournament in Qatar, putting the platform to the ultimate live production test. Now, MoovIT is expanding its TrueNAS footprint and positioning TrueNAS to replace an existing EditShare scale-out cluster. hubs.ly/Q04sp49Y0

A PBS station lost access to 50TB - 70 years of archives - because their cloud storage vendor went defunct. The twist: the data's fine. It's sitting with a data center that won't release it without a court order over who legally owns it. Data loss is the easy version of this problem. Read the story here: hubs.la/Q04s-FVy0

When one of the world’s largest grocery retailers moves to migrate 40,000 server workloads off its hypervisor stack while suing its software vendor for more than £100 million, enterprise IT takes notice. The bigger lesson goes beyond one vendor dispute. When storage is tightly coupled to the hypervisor, changing platforms becomes a much bigger infrastructure problem. Keep storage independent, and you keep more options open. Read the full story here: Lessons from the VMware Exodus. hubs.la/Q04sJBt70 #Virtualization #EnterpriseIT

Today, Kris and Chris put a live walkthrough of installing TrueNAS using TrueNAS Connect WebInstall to the test - can they get a system running and ready in under ten minutes? While it's installing, they'll talk about the technology behind the new method - why "the cloud" isn't in the data path, how secure WebSockets keep prying eyes out of the system even before the install, and confirm that no, the classic console-based setup isn't going anywhere! hubs.la/Q04rv1pf0
