What happened to Nolan Wells on Horn Island? His family says a new examination of his phone raises more questions.
At a Thursday news conference, digital examiner Andrew Garrett said messages were deleted sometime after Nolan last used his phone at 2:18 p.m. on July 4 and before his family recovered it. Garrett said he cannot determine who deleted them or why.
The team also recovered Snapchat conversations in which people discussed whether others on the island could be racist. One exchange described two men in boats as “really sketchy-looking.” Attorney Ben Crump stressed that the messages do not prove Nolan’s death was racially motivated.
Nolan was found dead two days after the island trip. His cause and manner of death remain undetermined. His family wants investigators to explain his injuries, examine the new phone findings, and keep the case open. They are also calling for a federal review.
