1. November 2008
Ronaldo said in an interview with Brazilian media:
“I am the first, second and third best player in the world. But there are other good candidates, like Kaka, Messi and Torres.”
Messi did not respond.
2. November 2010
Barcelona beat Almería 8–0, with Messi scoring a hat-trick. Ronald’s response was:
“The 8-0 win doesn’t tell me anything. Let’s see if they score eight against us on Monday.”
Barcelona then beat Real Madrid 5–0 in El Clásico.
Messi did not respond to Ronaldo either before or after the match.
3. February 2011
Ronaldo: “Am I better than Messi, or is Messi better than me? I’m not going to answer… you know very well.”
Messi did not respond.
4. September 2011
During Real Madrid’s away Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb, the fans chanted Messi’s name at Ronaldo. After the match, Ronaldo said:
“I think that because I am rich, handsome and a great player people are envious of me. I don’t have any other explanation.”

During Portugal’s away match against Cyprus, audiences chanted Messi’s name at Ronaldo, he said:
“The people chanting Messi at me are idiots/abnormal, because anyone who likes football likes watching Cristiano.”

Messi won the Ballon d’Or for the third consecutive year, while Ronaldo won that year’s European Golden Shoe. Ronaldo said:
“This trophy doesn’t depend on anyone’s votes.”

“I’m better than Messi. You cannot compare a Ferrari with a Porsche because they have different engines.”

During Portugal’s 3–2 win over Denmark at Euro 2012, Danish supporters chanted Messi’s name at Ronaldo. Ronaldo had missed two major chances during the match. He said:
“Do you know where Messi was this time last year? He was getting knocked out of the Copa América in his own country. I think that’s worse, don’t you?”
Messi did not respond.

Messi won his fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or, becoming the first player in history to win the award four times.
Ronaldo responded:
“My Golden Shoe is worth more than Messi’s Ballon d’Or.”
Messi later went on to win six European Golden Shoes, the all-time record. Ronaldo stopped saying gold shoe is better.

After the Ballon d’Or voting became public, Ronaldo commented on Messi not voting for him:
“It doesn’t surprise me that Messi didn’t vote for me. We know why.”

Modrić won the Ballon d’Or, The Best FIFA Men’s Player award and the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award. Ronaldo’s sisters made posts mocking Modrić and saying that he had stolen three major individual honors from Ronaldo.
