Pitch competitions have always been presented as a bridge between founders and investors.
But a new model is emerging across Web3: competitions designed less as investment platforms and more as client acquisition funnels.
The promise is familiar:
"Pitch in front of top VCs. Get exposure. Unlock funding opportunities."
Yet behind the scenes, many panels are increasingly composed of service providers — market makers, tokenomics consultants, listing agencies, marketing firms, and infrastructure companies — all looking for their next clients.
The issue is not that these companies provide value. Many do.
The issue is transparency.
A founder preparing to raise capital deserves to know whether they are pitching investors or presenting their project to potential vendors.
A true investor-focused competition should provide:
