A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after threatening three victims at gunpoint during carjackings he carried out in Cleveland in July 2025. Mickey Hodge was sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years of supervised released after pleading guilty.

Former U.S. Army soldier Cameron Wagenius was sentenced today to 70 months in prison for conspiring to hack into telecommunications companies' databases, access sensitive records, and extort the telecommunications companies into paying ransoms. Wagenius and his co-conspirators defrauded at least 10 victim organizations and attempted to extort at least $1 million from victim data owners.

Yesterday at the National Cyber Summit, Brett Leatherman, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, laid out the FBI’s updated Cyber Strategy, the most substantive public cyber strategy the Bureau has ever released.
In a conversation with Jason Fickett, an executive at Booz Allen Hamilton, AD Leatherman explained how the strategy builds capacity in two directions: internally, by investing in top cyber talent, advanced training, and AI tools to scale operations; and externally, by deepening partnerships that expand the FBI’s intel and operational capabilities.
Both approaches help the @FBI and its partners “move upstream” against cyber threat actors. That means going beyond reacting to individual incidents to proactively target the command-and-control infrastructure, tools, and criminal ecosystems that enable those actors.
AD Leatherman also highlighted the FBI’s investment in its Huntsville, Alabama campus, which now includes the Kinetic Cyber Range, a 22,000-square-foot training environment designed to simulate a small town and built for investigative training.

CASE UPDATE from @FBILouisville: Man Sentenced to 160 Months for Distributing Child Pornography
Jacob Murphy, 27, was sentenced to 160 months for distributing a visual depiction of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct. In January 2025, law enforcement received a cyber tip from the messaging platform, Kik, regarding an account, which was later identified as Murphy’s account, that was sharing child sexual abuse material. Murphy admitted that he knowingly distributed the sexually explicit media.

This week, Tyler Nike Thomas, 39, was indicted for crimes related to the disappearance and death of 17-year-old Hailey Buzbee. Court documents detail that Thomas allegedly met the teenage victim online playing video games, and as early as May 2024, Thomas allegedly attempted to entice the then 15-year-old victim to engage in sexual activity. In January 2026, Thomas allegedly traveled to Indiana to pick up the victim and transport her back to Ohio with him, all with the intent to engage in prohibited sexual activity with the victim. The indictment alleges that he murdered the victim during the course of these offenses.

CASE UPDATE from @FBISanAntonio: Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Threatening to Violently Overthrow the Government
Jay Anthony Villarreal, 25, was sentenced to prison for threatening a violent attack to overthrow the government. According to court records, Villarreal left his home on June 28, 2025, with the intent to carry out an attack in Washington D.C. Villarreal was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic assault weapon, a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, along with extra loaded magazines and multiple boxes of ammunition for each gun. Villarreal used social media in an effort to solicit military veterans to join him. A friend of Villarreal’s saw the social media post and reported it to the FBI.

Ardit Kutleshi, a citizen of Kosovo, pleaded guilty to creating and operating Rydox, an online marketplace that put cybercriminal tools and sensitive data up for sale, including the stolen identities and logins of thousands of people. The FBI and its foreign partners shut the marketplace down, and now the man who created it and ran it will face justice.
