🇮🇷🇷🇺🇬🇧 Iran lost territories about the size of Ukraine (620,000 km²) between 1813 and 1971 (roughly 40% of today's size), almost all to Russia and Britain, as one map draws it. → Russia took about 305,000 km² in the north, Britain about 310,000 km² in the east → Iran won back only about 25,000 km² → A land empire grabbed the north, a sea empire carved the east: Iran was squeezed from both sides → China tells a similar "century of humiliation" story, and it is used to justify a strong state today

🇫🇷Macron has secured extra diesel supplies from the Gulf to help ease France’s fuel crisis, but will it be enough to calm the protests? → France will receive an additional 200,000 tonnes of diesel per month from the UAE and Bahrain, bringing total Gulf supplies to 295,000 tonnes, over 10% of the country’s consumption. → More diesel could help bring prices down and ease shortages, but will cheaper fuel be enough to stop the protests? → If people are also struggling with the cost of living, high taxes and falling purchasing power, lower fuel prices alone may not be enough to calm their anger.

BREAKING: 🇺🇦🇰🇷Not a good time for Ukraine alliances. South Korea is withdrawing some embassy personnel from Ukraine due to security concerns and a diplomatic dispute. The dispute involves two North Korean prisoners of war who were transferred to Ukraine. South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Du-sun said Kyiv had failed to take constructive action to resolve the issue. The ongoing threat of Russian airstrikes is another reason for the partial withdrawal. A chargé d’affaires will maintain essential diplomatic contacts, while consular staff will remain to assist South Korean citizens.

🇯🇵 Japan has launched MMX, a spacecraft meant to bring back the first samples from Phobos, a moon of Mars, something no country has done. → It flies on an H3 rocket, enters Mars orbit in 2027 and is due back with the samples around 2031 So what does Japan gain by reaching for Mars's moons? → Science: whether Phobos is a captured asteroid or Martian debris → Standing: Japan leads a mission that Europe's agencies join What it risks → The H3 rocket's problems already delayed MMX from 2024, and the samples are five years away, while China scales fast Japan is betting on doing one hard thing precisely. Space prestige will go to whoever finishes the journey, not whoever launches most.
