In the late 1980s, Hong Kong actress Amy Yip 葉子楣 became famous as a pop-culture sex symbol known for her voluptuous figure.
Her popular nickname in Chinese was bōbà (波霸), which translates to a slang term for a woman with large breasts.
Over time, the name stuck and became widely used—especially in overseas markets—to describe both the large pearls and the bubble tea drink itself.
