Laundry is one of those things that makes you realize how stupid people create more work for themselves and others than is necessary. You should have enough clothes for this to be a weekly chore of loading and unloading two adjacent machines that do everything else for you.

Watching sports ball wasn't a hobby there either. None of my in laws who grew up in the FSU care about sports

Boomers are deathly afraid of being seen as finished; it's why they don't retire, and why they don't pass down field-knowledge. The fact they get to finally concede their role to some "powerful, all-knowing machine", rather than some entitled young person makes them ecstatic.
