Lionel Messi’s Last Dance: The End of an Unforgettable Argentina Era
There are some football moments that feel impossible to put into words.
Tonight, Lionel Messi will wear the Argentina shirt for the final time.
At the Monumental in Buenos Aires, the player who carried a nation through heartbreak, criticism, glory and unforgettable nights will finally say goodbye to the colours he has worn with pride for more than two decades.
Messi’s final Argentina appearance comes against Benin in a farewell match created specifically to celebrate his extraordinary international career. And what a journey it has been.
For years, Messi was judged by what he had not won with Argentina. He reached the 2014 World Cup final. He suffered painful Copa América defeats. At one point, the criticism became so overwhelming that he even announced his international retirement in 2016.
But he came back.
And eventually, everything changed.
In 2021, Messi finally lifted his first major international trophy with Argentina, winning the Copa América. A year later came the trophy that had defined so much of his career: the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Then came another Copa América triumph in 2024.

But numbers cannot fully explain what Messi means to Argentina.
They cannot describe the tears after defeats.
They cannot describe the celebrations after Qatar.
They cannot describe the millions of Argentines who watched him carry the famous No. 10.
They cannot describe the little boy from Rosario who left Argentina as a teenager, built an extraordinary career in Barcelona and eventually returned to give his country some of the greatest memories in its football history.
Tonight, the story closes.

When Messi walks onto the Monumental pitch, it will not simply be another international match.
It will be a goodbye.
A goodbye to the captain.
A goodbye to the No. 10.
A goodbye to the player who made an entire generation believe that anything was possible.
Argentina will continue without Lionel Messi. New players will emerge. Another captain will eventually lead the team. Another generation will dream of becoming the next great Argentine star.
But there will only ever be one Messi.
And when the final whistle comes tonight, Argentina won’t just be saying goodbye to a footballer.
They will be saying goodbye to an era.
Thank you, Leo.
Gracias por todo. 🇦🇷❤️
