A bench of justices GR Swaminathan and MD Sumathi made the above observations recently while granting a mutual consent divorce to a doctor couple. The couple got married in 2011, and both were employed in the same hospital. When the man wanted to pursue higher studies, and his wife stayed in her parents’ home and he visited her from time to time. During this period, they had two children, who were brought up by the wife in her parents’ house. During the pandemic, the husband stayed in the in-laws’ house with his wife and children. He later wanted to move out, which was opposed by the wife. Problems ensued, and the couple moved the family court. While the wife filed a petition seeking restitution of conjugal rights, the husband filed a divorce petition on the ground of cruelty. Both petitions were dismissed by the court, challenging which the couple had approached the high court. The judges observed that the responsibility of raising the financial resources traditionally rested on the husband, while the wife took care of the domestic front. “The situation can probably be remedied if husbands opt to be homemakers. If there can be housewives, there can be househusbands also. Let this become a new normal. We are of the view that this would help preserve the institution of marriage and family,” the judges opined. It would have been just if the husband acknowledged the role played by the wife in taking care of the family by mothering two children. But when the husband abandons midway, the wife is literally left nowhere,” the judges observed and granted them mutual consent divorce after the husband agreed to pay `2.5 crore to the wife to fulfil his financial obligations. The Assam Government has formally introduced provisions for paternity leave for male government employees, allowing eligible employees to avail up to two weeks of paid leave around childbirth, adoption and surrogacy. Under the new rules, a male government employee, including an apprentice or temporary employee, with fewer than two surviving children, may be granted paternity leave for 14 days during the "confinement" of his wife for childbirth. The leave can be taken up to 14 days before delivery or within six months of the delivery date. The employee will receive leave salary equal to the pay drawn immediately before proceeding on leave. Paternity leave will not be debited from the employee's leave account and may be combined with other admissible leave. However, it cannot be availed in more than one spell. The rules specify that paternity leave will not be available to a male employee who already has two surviving biological or legally adopted children at the time of applying for the leave. If the leave is not availed within the prescribed period, it will lapse. The rules clarify that paternity leave is available to married, unmarried, widowed and divorced male government servants. It is intended to support the spouse during childbirth, and, accordingly, Leave Travel Concession (LTC) will not be admissible during paternity leave. #formenindia

The Karnataka High Court has held that the quantum of permanent alimony cannot be determined based solely on the duration of marriage or “by applying a mathematical formula”. The parties were married on January 6, 2021. Prior to the marriage, the wife worked as an assistant professor but later resigned at the husband's instance. The husband was employed as a general manager in Doha, Qatar. In 2023, she filed a petition under Section 9 of the Hindu Marriage Act seeking restitution of conjugal rights before the family court. She alleged ill-treatment by her husband and his family and submitted that she was sent back from Qatar in 2022 when her visa was nearing expiration. The husband filed a counterclaim seeking divorce on the grounds of cruelty, alleging that the wife was quarrelsome, disrespectful to his family, and had visited the matrimonial home with police and relatives. In her rejoinder, the wife sought Rs 3 crore as permanent alimony. The family court dismissed the wife's plea and granted the divorce along with a permanent alimony of Rs 50 lakh to the wife. Aggrieved, both partied appealed before the High Court. In doing so the court dismissed cross appeals filed by a husband and wife challenging a family court order that dissolved their marriage and awarded Rs 50 lakh as permanent alimony to the wife. The Bench noted that the Family Court did not grant the permanent alimony of Rs 3 crore sought by the wife. Instead, after taking into account the circumstances of both parties including the incomplete financial disclosure by the husband, his job termination, the fact that the wife left her job at the husband's instance as well as her young age, educational qualifications and future job prospects, the court granted the amount at Rs 50 lakh. Holding that the husband failed to demonstrate that the Rs 50 lakh award was excessive and it warranted reduction to Rs 10 lakh. The High Court further found that the matrimonial relationship was “strained almost from the beginning” and had “deteriorated beyond repair.” The High court thus ordered the husband to pay ₹50 lakh alimony to his wife. #formenindia #alimony

The advisory comes amid reports of increasing incidents of alleged contract marriages involving cheating brides in Punjab. In several cases, a groom who fails to meet the eligibility requirements for the IELTS examination reportedly finds a prospective bride who performs well in the test and pays for her education, travel and stay, with the expectation that she will later sponsor or facilitate his move to Canada on a spouse visa. After reaching Canada, the woman allegedly cuts ties with the groom and his family, leading in some cases to litigation and police complaints in India. The warning comes as Canadian authorities have intensified oversight of immigration programmes and visa applications. In its message, the IRCC urged Canadians to exercise caution before sponsoring a spouse or partner for immigration, especially in situations where they have only recently met the person, are being pressured into a quick marriage, or when the individual has a history of multiple marriages or common-law relationships. The department also advised people to be wary if a prospective partner is unwilling to share details about their family background or personal history. “You don't have to stay in an abusive relationship to keep your status in Canada,” the department said. It added that spouses and partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents have the right to seek help and do not need to continue living with an abusive sponsor to maintain their permanent resident status. The searches were allegedly made after Ketan was pushed to his death at Lohagad Fort on June 18, 2026. According to the report, Ketan’s family reached the foothills of Lohagad after the incident and became suspicious when they felt that Siya did not appear to be grieving as expected. Upon returning home, she allegedly searched online for information on how to express grief and how to appear more emotionally distressed. Police identified these searches during their examination of digital evidence, the report mentioned. Siya searched for information on what to do if she was caught by police, what to say during questioning and how to avoid panicking. The chargesheet also details searches allegedly made by Siya while the murder was being planned. The investigation also found searches related to earlier deaths involving falls from cliffs or gorges around the Lonavala region. These included incidents at Tiger Point and the death of a woman, Mansi Govindpurkar, in the Lohagad area. Police also found searches concerning a similar death at Lohagad in 2025. The chargesheet allegedly stated that information relating to these cases was shared among Siya, co-accused Chetan Chaudhary and Ritesh Hange through social media and messaging platforms. A 45-year-old Indian Railways trackman, identified as Mahesh Tanwar, passed away in an apparent su*cide near the Shivdaspura Railway Station in Jaipur. An Uttar Pradesh court in Bareilly has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment following a 15-year-old legal battle regarding the murder of her elder sister. The convict, Mishkin, was involved in an illicit relationship with her brother-in-law (her elder sister Parveen's husband, Salim). When Parveen discovered the affair and objected, Mishkin and Salim conspired to eliminate her. On June 18, 2011, Mishkin lured Parveen into a field in the Bhojipura area, where she and Salim brutally murdered her with a knife and an iron rod before strangling her. Mishkin initially concocted a fake kidnapping story to mislead the police, claiming that four unidentified miscreants had abducted her sister.
