Why do some Nigerian business owners think they donât need a website?
I recently asked @codewithmide the founder of @fossapay why our storefront feature wasnât selling as much as we expected.
His answer was simple: many Nigerian business owners donât think they need websites.
He had seen business owners saying their customers were already on Instagram, WhatsApp and Telegram, so why add another platform?
Then I opened Instagram and saw Obi Dinma of Hairs By Dinma say she would never buy from a business without a website.
@diaryofa9jagirl of DANG had also shared that she made her business strictly order-via-website.
At that point, my friendâs argument had a counterpoint.
It got me thinking: is it the cost of building a website? is social media already doing enough? Or are we confusing where customers discover a business with where they should complete a purchase?
Think about how we buy online. You see something on Instagram, click a link, browse, check the price, pay and wait for delivery. We do this with SHEIN & Temu without thinking twice.
So why should the process be different when the business is Nigerian?
Once youâre receiving hundreds or thousands of DMs, your inbox becomes your catalogue, order form, payment confirmation and order tracker.
âHow much is this?â
âWhich colours do you have?â
âCan you send to Lagosâ
âHow do I order?â
Youâre answering questions customers could have found themselves.
