🇮🇹 The shooting that stunned Italy ⏪ In 1974, Luciano Re Cecconi won Lazio's first Scudetto. 😵 Three years later, 'L'Angelo Biondo' was shot dead on a Rome shop floor after a fake robbery prank went tragically wrong. The story of the soul behind Italian football's most notorious team 🧵👇 🥬 Born to a working-class family near Milan, Re Cecconi worked in grocers and metal workshops before his engine in midfield caught the eye of manager Tommaso Maestrelli. 🤪 When Maestrelli brought him to Lazio in 1972, Cecco stepped into an absolute madhouse. ⚔️ Lazio in the 1970s was divided into two armed, warring factions that dressed in separate rooms and fought like gladiators in training. 🎯 Guns were everywhere. Players shot target practice out of hotel windows and shot lightbulbs out to avoid getting out of bed. ❌ Amid the chaos, Re Cecconi never carried a firearm. ⛓️ While others grabbed headlines and courted controversy, the 'Blond Angel' was the quiet heartbeat, the glue, and the tireless engine that held a fractured dressing room together. 🏆 In 1974, against all odds, they won the Scudetto. ⚰️ Tragedy struck in late 1976 when coach Maestrelli died of stomach cancer. Devastated, Re Cecconi helped carry his coffin. 💔 Just 47 days later, Cecco's own life came to an end. 💎 On Jan 18, 1977, Re Cecconi and teammate Pietro Ghedin walked into a friend's jewellery shop. 🥸 With coat collars pulled up and hands in pockets like guns, they shouted: "Hands up! This is a robbery!" 🔫 The shopkeeper, traumatised by a robbery 10 days prior, reached for a pistol. Ghedin raised his hands immediately, but Re Cecconi kept up the bit. 💥 A shot was fired at point-blank range. 🗣️Collapsing to the floor, Re Cecconi’s final words were: "Era uno scherzo… solo uno scherzo." (It was a joke… only a joke). 😭 He was just 28 years old. ⚖️ The jeweller was cleared of criminal responsibility in a decision still debated today.
