Correcting the Record: “On Their Own Terms” Was Never “Leave Us Alone” Let’s correct this bullshit once and for all. Prince Harry and Meghan Sussex did not step back because they wanted to disappear. Their 2020 statement said they wanted financial independence, time between the UK and North America, and space to focus on their family. Their spokesperson later clarified that privacy was not the reason they left. They wanted to tell their story on their own terms. The press twisted that into “they want privacy” because it made a handy weapon: share a family photo and they’re hypocrites; set a boundary and they’re difficult. Choosing when to share pictures of your children does not mean you signed away their safety. According to the Sussexes’ spokesperson, photographers walked the perimeter of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s school, looked into the grounds and monitored the children. Police are investigating. That is not a celebrity “privacy” debate. It is a reported security incident involving little kids at school. So spare us the “but they wanted privacy” routine. Being famous does not give photographers permission to watch children at school. And where the hell is the security decision? This fight has dragged on for years. After Harry and Meghan returned to the UK, RAVEC commissioned new risk assessments. There is still no public decision. Now another security incident has been reported. How many more alarms have to go off before the people responsible stop dragging their feet? King Charles, you deserve to be called out. You are their grandfather. Archie and Lilibet are your grandchildren whether they live at a royal residence, perform royal duties, or fit neatly into the hierarchy the Palace keeps waving around. Their parents choosing independence does not make them less your family. The King does not personally make RAVEC’s decision. Fine. But don’t hide behind that as if you have no voice. The Palace can issue statements about Harry and Meghan’s status and say security questions belong with the authorities. So where is the public urgency? Where is the grandfather saying, “These are my grandchildren. Their safety matters”? You may not be able to order RAVEC to provide police protection. You can still demand urgency and make clear that your son and grandchildren matter to you. Shame on you, Charles. And shame on the government if it takes another incident to finish this review. Harry continues to bring attention to Britain through his work with Invictus. His family’s safety should not be treated like an inconvenience.
