Today, billionaires have yet again bribed, censored, and bullied their way to the top. As a result, a billionaire media conglomerate closely allied with the president will soon own one of its closest rivals, including some of the nation’s most critical news outlets. Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund will co-own those outlets, too. Layoffs will follow. People from L.A. to Atlanta will lose their jobs, small businesses will lose their contracts, your cable bill and movie ticket will be even more expensive. Dissent against money and power will be even harder to find. This did not have to happen. Thanks to an extraordinary outpouring of grassroots anger against the merger, a coalition of 12 state attorneys general sued to block it. They beat Paramount in court, winning a court-ordered pause on the merger, and beat them again at the negotiating table, getting the conglomerate to agree to pause the merger until as late as next June. But the Ellison family does not care about the law. Instead, they loudly threatened to leave California if their merger did not go through immediately. Gavin Newsom caved to that pressure. So did Xavier Becerra. And eventually, so did Attorney General Rob Bonta, agreeing to a weak settlement that will be exceedingly difficult to enforce. People want champions who are not afraid of rich bullies. Newsom, Becerra, and Bonta did not meet that mark. The people who work in the film and TV industry and the small businesses who support it will suffer as a result. And so will everyone who values dissent in our democracy. This is not the end. The coalition that fought to block this illegal merger will fight to break up big media. There is legislation pending in Congress today that would retroactively break up corrupt billionaire mergers. This industry was once marked with strict rules so that a small handful of conglomerates couldn’t own everything. There’s no reason we cannot return to that reality. There’s no reason we can’t build on it. But today is a loss, and that loss will be felt by the people who can least afford it.

‼️In Antitrust We Trust (w/ @BedoyaUSA)‼️ Former FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya returns to Bad Faith to explain the role Gavin Newsom & other west coast Dems played in undermining a lawsuit to block the Paramount/Warner Brothers deal. He also weighs in on the AI doomerist scuttlebutt of the last few weeks, & explains why he believes the big tech handwringing was about a desire for favorable regulatory conditions -- not a robot takeover.

MIT published a brutally honest report on what AI is doing to students. A committee of professors and students spent five months studying how AI changed learning on campus, and the findings read like a warning to every university on the planet. Study groups are disappearing. Office hours are emptying out. Problem sets and take-home exams no longer prove anything, because AI can produce credible solutions to almost any written assignment in the undergraduate curriculum. Students who lean on chatbots lose mastery and confidence, and some slip into what the report calls cognitive surrender, reaching for AI at the first hint of struggle. The numbers are rough. 46 percent of surveyed MIT undergrads use LLMs daily. 90 percent worry about their own overreliance. Undergrads who feel AI makes them replaceable now outnumber those who feel it makes them capable. The committee's answer surprised me. They refused to fight AI with surveillance. The report calls AI detectors unreliable, says lockdown browsers feel like spying, and warns that policing students builds a classroom atmosphere of mutual distrust. Instead, MIT wants to rebuild education around the things AI can't replace. That means oral exams, semester portfolios, in-person project work, and a required social component in every subject. The report even floats the idea of rethinking grades entirely, since without a GPA to optimize, much of the incentive to cheat with AI evaporates. The committee warns professors against replacing undergrad research assistants with AI agents just because they're cheaper, because a university exists to grow people, not output. The most famous tech school on earth admitted the machines broke its way of teaching. Its answer is more humans, not more software.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Just because technology is everywhere doesn’t mean it belongs everywhere. The tech industry wants us to believe that AI in early education is not only inevitable, but necessary. We don't see it that way. This week, we announced a moratorium on all generative AI for public school students in 2K through 8th grade. Because New Yorkers deserve to know that their kids will receive a high-quality education. They deserve to know that their children’s data won’t be mined by Big Tech. And they deserve to know that their children’s growth won’t be compromised for a corporation’s bottom line.

The largest pediatric amputee population in the world was created by the likes of this genocidal demon. The resistance managed to take his foot. So @adidas chose to make him the face of their company. I hope good people of the world let Adidas know they made a toxic decision to cheer genocide. May it poison their brand forever.

Give it about 75 days: Republicans will suddenly rediscover the national debt and use it as cover to cut Social Security and healthcare for the most vulnerable Americans, all while funding multi-billion-dollar wars overseas and pushing more tax cuts for the wealthy
Here is a video of you voting to pass Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" act, which adds $4,700,000,000,000 to the national debt by 2035.

This is the most predictable shit from Republicans: vote to give all the money to the rich and corporations via the Big Beautiful Bill and then demand poor and working people pay for the debt you put us all in.
🚨 Our national debt just hit 40 TRILLION DOLLARS! This is bad. Congress needs to get spending under control and BALANCE THE BUDGET. Americans deserve better.
Community note
Sen. Rick Scott voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act which raised the statutory debt limit by $5 trillion and is projected by CBO to increase deficits by $3.4 trillion over 10 years. floridapolitics.com/archives/74582… congress.gov/bill/119th-con… bipartisanpolicy.org/explainer/what… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Big_B…

Haiti doesn’t have a “gang” problem, it has a US imperialism problem. Trump just revoked TPS from 350,000 Haitians overnight. But why are Haitians driven to leave their country in the first place? In an interview from February, Dr. Jemima Pierre of @Blacks4Peace calls out US policy of "dumping guns and arms" in Haiti to create a failed state, resulting in the violence we see today.

greater percentage of children killed in Gaza than in Europe's holocaust. that's a hell of a statistic.
The scale of Israel's child killing in Gaza is historically extraordinary—and indefensible. #GazaGenocide

CNN: Yeah, I think a lot of people watching this to hear you, a Parkland survivor, talk about AIPAC in the same breath as NRA, will be surprising. HOGG: It shouldn’t be. Both are getting kids killed. I don't draw a line between whether it's kids in Parkland, kids on any street in America, or if it's kids in Palestine.
David Hogg, progressive organizer and Parkland shooting survivor, compares AIPAC's political influence to that of the NRA. It's a comparison AIPAC forcefully rejects. @davidhogg111

I don’t engage in political conversations as much anymore because too many liberals, especially Black liberals, seem more invested in fame, name recognition, and representation than actual political substance. A Black face in office does not automatically mean Black liberation. Too many Black voters continue supporting candidates who protect capitalism, corporate power, and the same systems that exploit working-class Black people. Even when leftists present evidence, voting records, donors, and policy outcomes, it often gets ignored because the candidate is popular, familiar, or knows how to perform representation. Representation without economic liberation is not progress. A Black politician who serves capital will still help maintain the same system harming Black people.

I have this app. Millions of Muslims have it. What a disgrace.
A plane in the United States was forced to land after the sound of the adhan was heard from a passenger's phone. A Southwest Airlines flight traveling from Tennessee to Florida was forced to make an emergency landing in Atlanta. Upon landing, a SWAT team boarded the aircraft and detained one of the passengers, accusing him of terrorism and posing a bomb threat. It was later revealed that the detained passenger was a Muslim. During the flight, his prayer-time app activated and played the adhan (the Islamic call to prayer). The crew reportedly interpreted the sound as a potential security threat, notified dispatchers, and decided to make an emergency landing.

🚨URGENT: Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s life is in immediate danger, Physicians for Human Rights Israel and his lawyer warned Saturday, after a prison visit revealed the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital bearing fresh, severe injuries to his head, eyes, ears, and neck, so disfigured his own attorney initially struggled to recognize him. 🔹Attorney Nasser Odeh, who saw Abu Safiya Thursday at the underground Rakefet interrogation facility in Nitzan Prison, said he arrived shackled hand and foot, escorted by masked guards, struggling to breathe and speak, unable to sit upright, and repeatedly on the verge of losing consciousness. 🔹Abu Safiya told him that after his Supreme Court appeal was heard June 10, four or five guards entered his solitary cell at Ganot Prison and beat him with a hammer and batons, and that since his June 24 transfer to Rakefet he has been beaten daily, losing consciousness several times without receiving medical treatment. 🔹“This is the last time you will see me,” he told his lawyer. “They brought me here to kill me. I don’t see myself surviving. This is the end.” 🔹PHRI notes the escalation in torture began directly after Abu Safiya challenged his detention in court. He has been held without charge since December 27, 2024, under Israel’s Unlawful Combatants Law. 🔹The group has appealed to Israel’s attorney general and prison service demanding his immediate transfer, an independent medical examination, and an urgent judicial visit “before it is too late.” Photo: Amnesty International
