What happens often is some idiot L5 will write a 1-pager saying hey we should fix this. A VP will read it and go yes good idea, you can have it. The L5 says no you don’t understand, I have a full plate. VP says don’t worry, your workload has been reduced to 95%.

weirdest part of working at any bigtech is if you poke around, it's easy to find projects that can be done in less than 1 month and would save the company >$10MM
but nobody gets around to doing them — usually because they're in a weird cross-cutting domain no single manager owns
