Left and right isn't British. ๐ฌ๐ง ๐
It's a seating plan. And it isn't even ours. It's French. ๐๐ซ๐ท
The French built a new parliament. ๐ช
The king's friends sat on the president's right... The king's enemies sat on his left.
That's it.
That's the whole idea. A way of splitting a room into two camps. We've been sitting in it ever since.
Britain had been running a parliament for 500 years by then. ๐๏ธ
Without it. Whigs and Tories. Liberals and Conservatives. Factions and interests. Arguments that went on for centuries.
But not a line with 2 ends. And look what we did without one. ๐ค
Slavery ended by Quakers and Tories and a Whig government, together.
The weekend, a deal between the mill hands and the mill owners.
The police, a Tory's idea. The whole country's now.
The NHS, a Labour minister building on a wartime plan, a miners' society and a Liberal's report.
Nobody's side. Everybody's.
Then, about 100 years ago, we borrowed the French word. ๐ And started calling each other left and right.
Here's the thing about a line with 2 ends. It tells you where everyone else is.
And it lies.
Ask the country what it wants and most of it says the same things. ๐ก
A doctor when you're ill. A copper who'll come. A wage you can live on. A country your kids can be proud of.
They teach you left and right. They never teach you it's a borrowed seating plan, or that this country did its best work without one.
That's what Proud Of Us is for.
No left. No right. Just us. No sponsors. No ads. No party. Just people who'd rather build than argue.
We agree on more than we're told.
It's time we sat at the same table and worked together. ๐
