📍MALAYSIA Human rights defenders Amir Hariri Abd Hadi and Chew Chuan Yang (Dobby Chew) have been detained under anti-money laundering legislation after presenting themselves for questioning at Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department. They are expected to be held at Jinjang police station. Their detention follows the freezing of their personal and organisational bank accounts, the imposition of travel bans, and a police raid on the offices shared by MANDIRI and HAYAT. Front Line Defenders condemns this escalating judicial harassment and believes it is directly linked to their legitimate and peaceful human rights work. We call on the Malaysian authorities to immediately release Amir Hadi and Dobby Chew, cease the misuse of anti-money laundering legislation against human rights defenders, and ensure that MANDIRI and HAYAT can carry out their work without intimidation or restrictions.

Front Line Defenders is saddened to learn about the sudden passing of 43-year old Ukrainian woman human rights defender Sasha Delemenchuk in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she lived and worked for many years. While still in Ukraine, Sasha worked with the Center for Civic Liberties and coordinated the efforts of Euromaidan SOS, a rapid response movement, supporting Ukrainian civil society during the Revolution of Dignity in 2013-2014. In the last decade, Sasha dedicated her work to protection of human rigths defenders in the ECA region, supporting enourmous amounts of human rights defneders at risk through her personal work, as well as through Tbilisi Shelter, a sanctuary for many throughout the years. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Sasha was working tirelessly to bring visibility to Russian war crimes through her own social media platforms. She also supported well-being and resilience of Ukrainian human rights defenders. The human rights community has suffered a huge loss - Sasha was a colleague, a friend, an ally, a community organizer, and someone to lean on and learn from. She supported people with her words and with her actions. We take this moment to honor her and stand in solidarity with her friends, family and community.
