Israel’s Ambassador to Somaliland, Michael Lotem, presented his credentials to President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi last week in a historic ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa. The ceremony marks another important step in strengthening relations between Israel and Somaliland, following their mutual recognition on December 26, 2025. Since then, ties between the two countries have continued to develop. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar made a historic visit to Somaliland in January 2026, while Somaliland opened its embassy in Jerusalem during President Abdullahi’s visit to Israel in June 2026. Following the presentation of credentials, a cornerstone-laying ceremony was held for Israel’s new embassy in Hargeisa. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said: “Israel is determined to develop and strengthen its relations with Somaliland. “The appointment of ambassadors, in accordance with the agreement reached when our countries established mutual recognition, is another important step in deepening the ties between us.”

During my working visit to Canada, I had the pleasure of meeting with H.E. Iddo Moed, Ambassador of Israel to Canada, alongside Dr. Mohamed Fadal, the President’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly exploring opportunities for collaboration in the development of civil aviation services, air traffic management, and airports infrastructure development.

December 26, 2025, marked a historic milestone with Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. Recent remarks by President Donald Trump, following President Abdirahman’s diplomatic engagements in Washington D.C., and New York, have further drawn attention to Somaliland’s strategic significance and international aspirations. Strategically located along the Gulf of Aden, Somaliland is well positioned to contribute to maritime security, counterterrorism, and regional stability, while offering significant opportunities for trade, investment, and economic cooperation. We appreciate the continued support of Somaliland’s international partners and remain committed to advancing diplomatic engagement and strategic partnerships grounded in mutual respect, shared interests, regional stability, and shared prosperity.

H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi and the Somaliland delegation held important engagements in Washington DC, with the Atlantic Council and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). These meetings provided an opportunity for substantive discussions on Somaliland’s strategic priorities, regional and maritime security and stability, economic development, and opportunities to strengthen engagement with the United States and the international community.

On the second day of its engagements on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, the Somaliland delegation led by the President, H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, held separate meetings with Congressman Brian Mast (Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs), and Senator Mike Rounds. Both lawmakers have been involved in legislative initiatives concerning Somaliland, including the Somaliland Partnership Act (S. 3861), and H.R. 5300. The meetings focused on strengthening cooperation and strategic engagement between Somaliland and the United States, including regional security and stability, maritime security in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea, trade, investment, and opportunities for economic cooperation.

I had the privilege of attending H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi’s address at the Hudson Institute in Washington DC. The President delivered a strong and thoughtful speech, clearly presenting Somaliland’s aspirations, priorities, and interests. He highlighted Somaliland’s commitment to peace, stability, development, and building stronger partnerships and constructive engagement with the international community. It was a proud and meaningful moment to see Somaliland’s story, achievements, and aspirations presented with such clarity and dignity on an important international platform in the United States.

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, today convened a High-Level Diplomatic and Partnership Engagement Meeting with representatives of the international community in Nairobi, Kenya. During the meeting, His Excellency highlighted his administration's key achievements, the challenges facing the nation, and the opportunities ahead. He also addressed the State of Israel's recognition of Somaliland and other ongoing diplomatic engagements, as well as the government's peacebuilding efforts aimed at resolving the conflict in Eastern Sool.

The Republic of Somaliland and the State of Israel have officially signed a Strategic Cooperation Declaration. This landmark development establishes the foundation for a long-term strategic partnership and strengthens cooperation between the two states.

It was a great honor to attend the launch of the Somaliland Independence Recognition Institute. The Institute will play a vital role in shaping Somaliland’s recognition roadmap and advancing its international recognition efforts.

Pleased to meet Ms. Louise Hancock, Head of the British Office to Somaliland. We discussed UK–Somaliland relations, institutional capacity building, and opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The UK remains a valued partner in development.
