Opus 5.5 is pretty insane for Excel read/write I have a few dozen models that are 4-8 quarters out of date. Prior LLMs had gotten better at simple, single quarter updates, but were still sketchy with multi-quarter refreshes (and failed on from scratch builds, to a typical hedge fund standard). Opus is really the first model that can one-shot my Refresh Modeling Skill Pack in a way that passes my Turing test (i.e. I couldn't tell if this was updated by a human or an agent) and passes final validation in a way that I find reliable Exciting progress.

Where does it get the data it fetches for the updates? Company websites? Third party?

Daloopa & Factset, mostly Daloopa which is seen as the gold standard for fundamental/KPI MCP right now You can do it without, but it's a lot slower, less reliable and much spottier. Will capture major financial statement numbers but miss many KPIs, GAAP-Adjusted, etc almost to the point of not being useful

Astra has been great, feels like Opus leapfrogged (on small set of tests so far)

Did you use any MCP for data?

Back in January I speculated that Excel modeling (the actual tasks of updating / inputting information, not the thought behind the inputs themselves) would be solved in the next year or so. Got clowned for it on X. We're basically there. youngmoney.co/p/financial-mo…

Do you feed it the Q's?

I did the same today. But I combined the new tables function in Gemini Workbook. Uploaded all historical filings (downloaded using claude) plus transcripts there. Told it to pull all data, exported that into excel and told Opus 5.5 to structure data then setup the model according to template. Found no fault or issues so far. Quite exciting.

Modeling is pretty much solved imo

Did you build the original model from the ground up using AI?

multi-quarter refreshes were always the tell. single quarter is pattern matching, keeping the whole model coherent across 8 quarters is where the older models would drift
