Pixel art removes enormous amounts of information. You don’t get the perfect jawline. You don’t get skin texture. You don’t necessarily even get an obvious facial expression. Instead, you get symbolic identity. The viewer has to complete the character. And that creates an interesting psychological phenomenon: Pixel art gives the owner more room to project themselves into the character. Let’s face it, we’re all complicated.
