The UT-Austin football photo controversy, which has unmasked a really ugly identitarian subcurrent on the right, is deeply ironic. The right-leaning legal movement—conservatives and libertarians—spent decades fighting to defeat the principle that universities should admit students based on race. Texas was even an important battle in this war! In Fisher v. Texas, the right lost, and the Court let the university keep picking kids based on skin color, in 2013 and 2016.
Flashforward to 2023, and finally, the right wins: After SFFA v. Harvard, the Court says no more race-conscious admissions. Unfortunately for Bo French and his identitarian ilk, preventing universities from advantaging certain minorities does not only and always benefit white students. But this is what race-neutrality looks like: plenty of Asian and Indian overrepresentation.
At some point, if you're against progressive admissions officials privileging certain minorities, and you're also against race-blind policies under which other minorities do well, you are basically just outing your movement as white nationalist and shouldn't complain when you are denounced as such.
