What is called progress commonly means the right to a change of mind without a change of heart. Its ideal is reform without repentance; but its achievement is change without reform. The peculiar test of it, however, is in this; that it never allows any old doctrine to benefit by any new discovery.
The corrupt accretion called capitalism is spoken of as something sacred that must not be “inconvenienced;” the sacred sanity of the family is treated as a troublesome accident that must not “inconvenience” it.
It is a queer situation. Our time of transition is called a time of destruction and construction and reconstruction, and examples could be given of all three. But what we are really trying to do is to tear down the wall and leave the wallpaper.
The clue to this and innumerable other modern complications is precisely that the employer must come first, before even the law-giver, before even the policeman.
And it is because it is not a question of a fellow citizen, like a dentist, but of a feudal lordship that is a rival to the family, that the reformer can tag the employer on to the end of his mortal tragedy without any sense of incongruity.
Many are preferring the heathen relapse of divorce to the hard and high ideal of loyalty; just as many are preferring the heathen relapse of servile status to the hard and high ideal of liberty.
I freely admit that many people, even poor people, may want to be divorced. And I freely admit that many people, even poor people may want to be enslaved; as starving men often sold themselves into slavery in the last days of paganism.
The barbaric twilight of all the Paleozoic and Mesozoic nonsense darkens the clean and level daylight in which things are judged equally as good or evil. It introduces an element of mere restlessness, so that even scientific facts are accepted not as facts but merely as fashions.
The matter for all sane men to decide is whether they want a certain type of society or not; but it is folly for them to refuse what they want because parts of it have already been obtained by other people.
Now across all this common sense cuts the disastrous division between the merely conservative and the merely progressive; or, as in that orgy of pedantry, the Common Sense Leader, between the Paleozoic and the Mesozoic.
As long as industrial intellectualism is hag-ridden and hypnotized by that false antithesis, so long it will go on getting things it does not want, and getting tired of them because it has not got them.
Any person of common sense judges a thing by whether it is the thing he wants, not by whether it is old or new, or (as is most probable) partly old and partly new. The only vital point for common sense is that the man wants something.
