We are deeply saddened to share that Sylivester Chaisamba, Assistant Country Coordinator for GLOBE Tanzania, recently passed away. Sylivester worked for the Tanzania Meteorological Agency and had served as Assistant Country Coordinator since 2015. A dedicated GLOBE trainer, he actively championed the GLOBE Program in Tanzania and throughout the Africa region. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the GLOBE Tanzania and Africa communities.

Did you know that the United States Department of Agriculture has designated August as "Tree Check Month?"
So, what does this mean? Since August is closing in on the end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the end of winter in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the most ideal time to check trees for pests and signs of damage.Throughout the month of August 2026, the Trees Around the GLOBE Campaign held a Tree Check Month Intensive Observation Period (IOP) for Tree Height and Land Cover. During the IOP, there were 617 tree height observations from 273 global sites in 22 countries and 423 land cover observations from 227 global sites in 25 countries. During the IOP, there were numerous observations that included metadata comments about the health of the trees that were being observed. The melting season for Arctic sea ice is about 40 days longer than in 1979. Much of that change happened prior to 2010, when the season length stabilized.
The findings come from a @NASA-led study of satellite observations of Arctic sea ice from 1979-2023. go.nasa.gov/4yKFreB

Fall vibes come early in the far north 🍂
The low-growing shrubs in this area reach peak red, orange, and yellow in mid-September, finds a @NASA and @SDState analysis of satellite data.
But blink and you might miss it! Peak color can last a week or less in the far north.

Join the PACE Clouds Challenge from the 15th of September to the 15th of October 2026 and share your clouds observations to see how they compare to observations taken by satellites above. Clouds observations taken within a 5-minute window of PACE passing overhead will help NASA scientists like Dr. Andy Sayer compare ground-based observations of clouds to PACE data to get a sense of how well PACE measures cloud edges and total cloud cover.

Your GLOBE observations can now match to 10 satellites!
With the addition of PACE, your Clouds observations can be matched to six satellites and your Land Cover observations to four satellites. Why try to match the timing of your observation to a satellite? When you do, you can receive an email from NASA that provides satellite data aligned with your observation location.
For Clouds observations, aim to make your observation within 15 minutes of a satellite passing overhead to receive a match. For Land Cover observations, matching is available for every observation.
