Loves the messy swamps of medicine. Believes in fierce compassion and dogged kindness for all, including Drs. MH GP/educator/researcher/policy maker.Views my own
People have a right to choose their GP. International trends in medicine, dentistry & vet science show that patients with complex care are more likely to choose a woman. Medicare privileges quick medicine. All genders do good work, fast or slow, shouldn't we pay people equally?
Our book on sexual harassment in medicine almost ready to publish, & so grateful to the authors.Parisa Pakdel from Iran,Dabota Buowari from Nigeria,& others from Japan, Malaysia, Mexico & others++ We are working to make the book open access.Want to help? gofund.me/30294db4
Beyond angry. Yet another young person today who has been "treated" using a variety of non-GP mental health strategies (including digital) who actually has a brain tumour. Doesn't everyone deserve a medical workup before we "treat" their "mental health"?
Postpandemic, there's been a lot of changes in health. Doctors have been accused of disrespecting their other health professional colleagues who are extending their scope of practice. But for me, the problem has nothing to do with the titles any of us hold or how we trained.
maybe, we doctors aren't "turf warring", we are worried. What if we are right? What if some health professionals don't know what they don't know? Are we, as a community, ok with this? Primary care isn't a hospital. You can work alone, & the community may not know you are unsafe
It should be about the community. My $400 000 of training,my 600+ exams,my yearly $10 000 indemnity, my compulsory CPD is to make sure the community is as safe as it can be.Why are we decided it's ok to bypass all of that? It's supposed to be cheaper, but I doubt it's as safe.
#medicalmisogyny I have three chronically ill daughters & have been on the other side of awful mansplaining, misogyny & gendered harm. BUT. Can we please not equate misogyny with doctors? This is not a medical problem. It's a social & healthcare problem #healthcaremisogyny
Many GPs are leaving because of vitriol, violence & prejudice. Want to see what this looks like?? Here's my analysis of what ACT Health says about us.430 000 words of their comms analysed. Many of us have fought for women's right for decades. We're not the enemy #healthcaremisogyny
Please don't equate Drs with patriarchy & nurses with compassionate care. It doesn't do either of us any favours. If the problem is healthcare, call out healthcare. We are losing female GPs. They're not the enemy. They are an endangered species. What a waste. #healthcaremisogyny
As a woman Dr who stood on the shoulders of giants like Jean Hailes & Jo Wainer, I'm a bit sick of the term "medical misogyny". Many, many Drs have worked tirelessly for women. At great personal & financial cost, (due to Medicare misogyny). Not all advocates are nurses @gedkearney
Dr Stefania Siedlecky was a Dr, teacher &feminist. She was the 1st adviser in women's health for the Whitlam govt, led responses to the issue of female genital mutilation & was awarded the AM for her services to women's health. Not all Drs are misogynists #healthcaremisogny
There's a Federal Government push (Digital Mental Health plan & recent review of Better Access) to "uberise" mental health. It sounds good, right? Go online, do a questionnaire, get referred to a MH worker directly & "avoid GP gatekeepers". Here's why it's a bad idea.
Why am I so angry? Here's the $65 million+ govt funded research building for Orygen (the research arm of Headspace). Next to it the situation for public patients Royal Hobart. I'm tired of seriously ill patients battling for care. It's unjust & inhumane & not fixable with an app
