A piece of @HecklerAndKoch history that I think is definitely super interesting to look at. ​In the late 1970s Heckler & Koch wanted a tactical shotgun for police and security work and had no shotgun line of their own. They already handled Franchi export sales outside Italy, so they went to Franchi instead of learning shotgun manufacture. Franchi designed it and built the parts. H&K brought those parts into Germany and did final assembly so the guns could legally be marked and sold as H&K products. Ian McCollum’s account of that arrangement is the cleanest one: it was enough German work to put their name on it, not an in-house shotgun program. What came out the other end was a gas operated 12 gauge semi auto with a wooden stock and forend, a tubular magazine, and on many of them a factory A&W shot diverter. That diverter squashes a round pattern into a tall, narrow rectangle so pellets string vertically on a target instead of spraying hostages beside him. GSG 9 and similar units were the customer that asked for that. About 1,500 were made. Most went to agencies in Germany, Austria, Spain, and Portugal. A few hundred leftovers reached the US in the late 80s and early 90s through Kiesler Police Supply. So the “spin” was wood furniture and a hostage safe muzzle device on a Franchi gun that H&K assembled enough to stamp.
