Author of fiction and creative non-fiction who somehow managed to get an MFA. Miniature painter and all-around nice guy, well, at least some of the time.

Summer has slowed down my workload a bit. So, to fill some time, I’m offering discounted beta-reading services. Pricing for an 80K-word manuscript would be 150 USD. If you are interested in the cost for your work, message me here or via email at Geno.merryman@gmail.com.

I love when I go back to old writing and find a missing comma or typo that had been all but invisible when I was doing the writing. Don’t get me wrong, I feel bad for the mistake, but noticing the small errors means I’m seeing past my insecurities.

This one is wet, and this one is wet, and… A post showed up on my wife’s Facebook this morning from someone I’d all but forgotten existed. I only know them as Jeff Vader, and that was back when I was going by Mr. Stevens, Head of Catering, in the Wild West that was early-teens Facebook. Jeff Vader, who incidentally ran the Death Star, and I crossed paths, and for a brief time we shared a love of the comedy of Eddie Izzard and an animosity between us because all the trays were wet. Here is a link to a video that might help make this nonsense clear. bing.com/videos/riverview/re…

I’ve got to admit that I waste a good portion of every evening playing video games. Right now, it’s first-person shooters (FPSs), mainly Battlefield 6, but at other times I play ARPGs like Path of Exile 2, and right now I’m killing time waiting for the November release of GTA 6. I’m working on an essay that looks at what these games provide for my ADHD addled brain. While you wait for that, here’s something I wrote a while back about the things I learned playing Battlefield 2024. genowrites.substack.com/p/pl…

I have to admit that I’ve been in the fog of writing lately. And I don’t mean that in a good way. The rejections keep on piling up, leaving me to wonder if I might be on the wrong track, chasing something that I can never catch. But I keep on plugging away, and some days, like today, the fog seems to lift just a bit.

My wife Trena decided to make the annual transition from her natural hair to extensions a little early this year. She normally holds off until the temps drop a bit, but she found some hair online that just couldn’t wait. So I thought I’d share an essay I wrote about her hair and my use of foul language. genowrites.substack.com/p/yo…

I found this God-forsaken pager in the bottom of a junk drawer last night, and knowing it was still in the house made it hard for me to sleep. The thought of its incessant beeping makes my blood pressure go through the roof. You see, the thing was my near-constant companion for close to fifteen years when I worked for a restoration contractor. It would go off at the worst possible times. Usually when I was just dozing off or pulling into the drive after a long day. And no matter the time, it always required immediate attention.

My office staff got very excited when my latest talking-cat paranormal mystery arrived in hardcover. It was hard to get them to keep still for a photograph.

As a writing project, I’ve been thinking it might be fun to try and drive Uber cross-country. Take the long fares when they’re offered and go from city to city in whatever direction the app sends me. I could make money and meet people.

I saw this on a street corner the other day. Usually, these sign spinners are advertising for something, but strangely, the only thing this guy seemed to be trying to promote was the Ghostbuster services. I didn’t realize that was a thing, but I guess everyone needs to make a living somehow.

I just published an essay on Substack titled ‘Writing with Coke-Induced Fervor,’ where I look at the advice write drunk, edit sober, in relation to Stephen King’s drug-addled creation of Cujo. You can find the essay here. genowrites.substack.com/p/wr…
