How students who have memorized the alphabet and spent a year in kindergarten, where usually a program of explicit synthetic phonics has been delivered, end up in my remedial phonics program in first grade or later. 🧵
Oh, and don’t forget the alphabet, which many people memorize without first having to understand the alphabetic principle. 5/

When I focus on teaching the conceptual dimensions of the alphabetic principle, students who were previously impervious to the constant mentions and instruction of letters present in their classrooms become able to learn GPCs I have not taught them, presumably in the classroom.

From these observations, I deduce that understanding the alphabetic principle forms a better foundation for learning, remembering and applying GPCs than memorizing the alphabet forms for understanding the alphabetic principle. End of 🧵

Edutwitter is mind boggling - that people cannot understand that different teaching methods serve different purposes across different contexts and that understanding the benefits & limitations of each and how they complement each other is what effective teaching looks like.

Emily Hanford knows she is not a reading expert so I hope others will stop referring to her that way.
I don’t call myself a reading expert. I’m a journalist.

#G2Great A6 I want to think more deeply about assessment. What is it for, what do we really need to know beyond what we can see during teaching and learning activities, what is truly useful, what is needed to prevent students “falling through the cracks.”

#G2Great A5 It would open up possibilities for sensible ways to track students’ progress through literacy learning, ways that answer the questions we need to ask.

#G2Great A4 It would take a big cultural shift for English speakers to stop expecting everyone else to learn our language and start valuing other languages and teaching them. Another obstacle is the crowded curriculum.

#G2Great A3 Emphasis off curricular tools and onto ongoing professional learning that develops teachers’ deep understanding of the literacy learning process in all its variations, complexities and nuances. Then trust us to do our job.

#G2Great A2 There need to be more people in decision making roles with a significant educational background, who can understand the complexities and nuances of literacy learning.

The Left started it. Those damn progressives, wanting equality for women, acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, respect for First Nations peoples, and a celebration of multiculturalism. Why can't they be happy living in the Australia of the 1950's? 😏 #auspol #journalism
