Mark Carney is doubling down on a colonial force in the West Bank with barely a peep from pro-Palestinian forces. In fact, some are supporting a security initiative that highlights the scope of Canadian Zionism and liberal/left naivety towards “aid”. At the UN last week, the prime minister announced new funds to bolster a security force assisting Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank. As part of a hundred-million-dollar announcement, Canada added $20 million in “aid” for Palestinian security initiatives with Carney noting in an official release, “we will continue to lead in training the Palestinian Authority’s security forces through Operation PROTEUS, and we stand ready to extend that support to Gaza when conditions permit.” The NDP and most major Palestine solidarity groups seem to have ignored a rare government mention of the two-decade old Operation PROTEUS despite Carney tying it to potentially enforcing Israeli/US rule over Gaza. “Pro-Palestinian” Liberal MP Salma Zahid went a step further explicitly endorsing the move. Zahid posted, “I welcome this increased support from Canada, including the RCMP training Palestinian police officers in the West Bank. We need to do all we can to improve safety and security in the region.” But this “aid” has nothing to do with Palestinian safety and security. In fact, over the past two decades, Canada has spent several hundred million dollars supporting a US effort to build a Palestinian Authority Security Force to assist Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank. The PA forces, which are vetted by Israel’s internal Shin-Bet intelligence agency, act as the “subcontractor of the Occupation”. They have repeatedly disrupted demonstrations against Israel’s brutality in Gaza and turned their guns on Palestinians resisting occupation in Jenin and elsewhere. As Tamara Nassar explained: “PA forces are Israel’s foot soldiers. The body’s raison d’être is to suppress Palestinian opposition and resistance to help Israel maintain its occupation in the West Bank while promoting the illusion of Palestinian autonomy and representation. In the areas where the PA has nominal control, Palestinian forces are only allowed to arrest other Palestinians. They cannot touch Israeli soldiers or settlers who attack Palestinians.” Around two dozen Canadian troops and a dozen RCMP officers are part of Operation Proteus, which trains PA security forces as part of a mission led by the Office of the United States Security Coordinator. Initially in charge of organizing the PA force, US General Keith Dayton told the Associated Press in 2009, “We don’t provide anything to the Palestinians unless it has been thoroughly coordinated with the State of Israel and they agree to it.” Like all colonial authorities throughout history, Israel looks to compliant locals to take up the occupation’s security burden. What is unique about the training and support for the PA security forces is the role of third-party trainers from Canada, Britian and the US. Canada’s role in training, equipping and assisting the PA force began in earnest after Hamas won legislative elections in 2006. To sow division within Palestinian society, Ottawa cut off aid and refused to recognize a Palestinian unity government. When Hamas officials were ousted from the Palestinian unity government in June 2007, Ottawa devoted significant resources to creating a Palestinian security force “to ensure that the PA maintains control of the West Bank against Hamas,” as then Canadian Ambassador to Israel Jon Allen was quoted as saying by the Canadian Jewish News. In 2010 deputy foreign minister Peter Kent said Operation Proteus received “most of the money” from a five-year $300 million Canadian “aid” program to the PA. Today, Operation Proteus receives $20 million per year directly and more funding indirectly. A heavily censored 2012 note that Postmedia unearthed through an Access to Information Request confirmed the goal of Canadian security aid to the PA was to protect a corrupt Mahmoud Abbas, whose electoral mandate expired in 2009, from popular backlash. Canadian International Development Agency president Margaret Biggs explained, “The emergence of popular protests on the Palestinian street against the Palestinian Authority is worrying and the Israelis have been imploring the international donor community to continue to support the Palestinian Authority.” Biggs further explained, “The Israelis have noted the importance of Canada’s contribution to the relative stability achieved through extensive security co-operation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.” The head of the aid agency said a sizable chunk of Canada’s “aid” to the Palestinians helped suppress protests at the behest of the colonial ruler. In last week’s announcement Carney expressed a desire to extend Canada’s role in PA security assistance to Gaza. Last November, reported The Maple, Canadian soldiers and RCMP part of Operation PROTEUS attended an Israeli military seminar showcasing its genocidal methods in Gaza. Alongside learning from the génocidaires, Canadian soldiers were part of what the New York Times labelled “The American-Run Base Planning Gaza’s Future”. Now, the US is seeking to build a base in Gaza to serve as headquarters for up to 5,000 personnel, part of the Donald Trump led Board of Peace’s planned International Stabilization Force. Carney is preparing to assist these efforts through Operation Proteus. Opponents of genocide and apartheid should oppose these moves and demand the end of Operation Proteus. From Haiti to the Philippines, Canadian “aid” has often been used to subjugate the already disenfranchised. Leftists should be far more skeptical of Canadian “aid”. The assistance Carney announced last week is part of what he described as a “Zionist Palestinian state”. It’s an odious conception.

We are alarmed about a recent document published by Public Safety Canada which describes anti-Zionism wholly as a form of antisemitism. We reject this claim as a dangerous attack on legitimate political speech, and urge the Canadian government to immediately retract it. This latest conflation does not come out of nowhere. For years, we have warned that the controversial IHRA definition of antisemitism, adopted by the federal government in 2019, effectively targets speech that is critical of Israel and Zionism. Canada’s IHRA handbook, issued by Canadian Heritage in 2024, identified speech about Zionism as alleged examples of antisemitism. The new document from Public Safety is the most explicit conflation of these concepts yet from the federal government. By regarding anti-Zionism entirely as a form of antisemitism, Canada is creeping towards the censorship of speech and activism in support of Palestinian human rights. This is the intended result of the relentless pressure from pro-Israel lobby groups, which have been lobbying for anti-Zionism to be treated as synonymous with antisemitism in order to shut down debate about Israel’s escalating crimes against the Palestinian people. To be clear, Zionism is the political ideology behind the creation of the state of Israel. Like all nationalist ideologies rooted in colonialism, it is not simply benign. Zionism is experienced by Palestinians as dispossession and oppression, due both to the historic planned mass ethnic cleansing of historic Palestine by Zionist forces and the continued violence throughout the occupied territories. Zionism continues to be the ideology that justifies Israel’s system of apartheid that oppresses and dominates the Palestinian people as a whole, as recognized by a virtual consensus of major human rights organizations We affirm that anti-Zionism is a legitimate form of political, philosophical, and academic expression against concrete injustices, both historical and contemporary. By defining opposition to Zionism as inherently antisemitic, Public Safety Canada is itself engaged in systemic racism against Palestinians and attempting to silence legitimate debate about apartheid and genocide. This perpetuates a climate of political persecution and erodes the ability of Canadians to engage with urgent matters of human rights. This is the very opposite of public safety. We echo the demands of @IndJewishVoices, the United Jewish People’s Order, and @FacultyJewish, who want the federal government to: 1) clarify that anti-Zionism is not a form of antisemitism; 2) acknowledge the harm that conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism does to Palestinian and Jewish communities; and 3) affirm the legitimacy of anti-Zionism as part of political debate and criticism concerning Palestine and Israel.

The scope of Carney’s support for the lawless genocidal Jewish supremacist state is stunning. In the last few days, his government granted Netanyahu access to Canadian skies, a Liberal MP was punished for voting against arms shipments & they labelled it racist to oppose this century’s leading racist movement. On Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was granted the right to travel through Canadian airspace twice. His “Wing of Zion” aircraft travelled over Canada on route to New York and back to Tel Aviv. Ottawa okayed the overflight, which in practical terms granted him a shortened flight, despite Netanyahu facing an outstanding warrant for war crimes from the International Criminal Court. A year ago, Prime Minister Carney claimed Netanyahu would be arrested if he entered Canada. Instead, he has repeatedly granted the outlaw express flight access. While most countries’ diplomats walked out on Netanyahu’s speech at the UN General Assembly, Canada’s ambassador remained seated for the genocidaire. As Ambassador David Lametti listened, Netanyahu pledged to “finish the job” in Gaza, boasted about blowing Lebanese up with pagers and claimed if Israel hadn’t attacked Iran “we’d all be dead”. A Haaretz article headlined “Netanyahu just incited genocide in his UN speech”, concluded by noting a “wanted war criminal got onstage at the UN to incite continued genocide — another nadir for the crumbling institution.” On Friday CBC reported that Liberal MP Sean Casey was recently stripped of his parliamentary secretary position for supporting an NDP MP’s bill to close a loophole regarding arms exports allowing weapons to be shipped via the US to Israel. Non-cabinet Liberal MPs were previously free to vote with their conscience on private members bills, but that party principle has run up against Liberal support for genocidal Jewish supremacy. In response Doctor Kavita Algu noted how “Carney demoted Sean Casey for voting to close a loophole that would decrease Canada’s weapons use in war crimes; but he allowed Vince Gasparro to keep his equivalent position after faking an announcement banning [music group] Kneecap from Canada for opposing genocide.” As Jewish settlers rampage in the occupied West Bank, Ottawa announced new funds this week to bolster a security force assisting Israel’s illegal occupation. Canada added $20 million in “aid” for Palestinian security initiatives with Carney noting, “We will continue to lead in training the Palestinian Authority’s security forces through Operation PROTEUS, and we stand ready to extend that support to Gaza when conditions permit.” Over the past two decades, Canada has spent hundreds of millions of dollars through Operation PROTEUS supporting a US effort to build a Palestinian Authority Security Force to assist Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank. On Thursday Public Safety Canada released a report that says explicitly that opposition to Jewish supremacist colonialism is racism. In a section on Understanding Antisemitism Public Safety notes, “Antisemitism, which includes anti-Zionism, is not always obvious.” The report is the latest step by the government to demonize and criminalize maybe the most significant anti-racist movement in Canada and the world. In 1975 most countries voted for a UN resolution labelling Zionism racism. Since then, Israeli society has become more racist, passing a slew of apartheid laws, banning Palestinian parties from elections, committing genocide in Gaza, etc. Still, Ottawa just labelled it racist to oppose a movement/state that has been at the forefront of promoting xenophobia and supremacism across the globe. To weaken its neighbours Israel has stoked religious sectarianism. Al Jazeera recently reported that the IOF has largely “destroyed predominantly Shia villages in southern Lebanon. Nearby Christian villages have been told they will be spared if they remain neutral.” In the West the Israeli propaganda apparatus has promoted anti-Muslim sentiment. The Israeli government and its local lobbyists have ploughed large sums into racist activists and outlets like Tommy Robinson and Rebel News. Little discussed, the Zionist movement has been a central factor in rising anti-immigrant sentiment in Canada during the past three years. Doublespeak has definitely arrived. Canada has officially labelled it racist to criticize a gigantic purveyor of racism. And it’s part of Mark Carney’s extensive support for a lawless genocidal supremacist state.

When Carney gave his now-famous speech in Davos, many of us - perhaps naively - were excited that Canada would emerge as a global leader to reinforce international law and its principles. Ever since, Carney has worked hard, it appears, to disappoint us. Here, for instance, he downplays Trump's language of annihilation as mere "war talk" and goes on to repeat the Israeli line that Iran constitutes an existential threat to Israel. Carney's key point in Davos was that Western states applied international law "with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim." And that is exactly what Carney did here. He downplayed Trump's horrific language (would he have done it if Pezeshkian had uttered those words?) and then went on to indirectly justify the illegal war by repeating Israeli propaganda re Iran's threat to Israel. Deep inside, I knew he would disappoint. Just not this fast and not this embarrassingly.

About Iran, Mark Carney is a pathetic sycophant of Donald Trump. Remaining silent in the face of the US president’s genocidal threats is odious; justifying them is scandalous. On Tuesday the prime minister was asked (in French) if he thought Trump went too far when he says he is considering destroying Iran? Carney responded by saying Iran is “one of the greatest threats in the current world” and claimed it poses an “existential threat to Israel and its allies.” After the PM was pressed further about Trump’s threats Carney said, “Well, there is a war underway, and he’s speaking the language of war.” At the General Assembly on Tuesday the US president said he is considering a deal with Iran “that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country. Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?” On Sunday, Trump made a similar declaration, saying he was considering “wiping Iran out, letting them rot economically or making a deal.” The US president also mused do “I blow the entire nation up.” Three days earlier Trump asked, “Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not?” Previously the world’s most powerful man threatened to leave “very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran” and “a whole civilization will die tonight.” Notwithstanding Carney’s statement, this is not simply the language of war. For example, Russian president Vladimir Putin isn’t threatening to “annihilate” or “wipe out” Ukraine. This is the language of an unhinged genocidal maniac. All Canadian politicians and commentators must stridently condemn Trump. As the US/Israeli war of aggression has gone from moral outrage to strategic catastrophe, Carney has continued to placate the US president as he digs himself, region and world into greater trouble in Iran. On Tuesday, Canada joined the US, UK, France, Italy Japan and Germany to criticize Ansar Allah (Houthis) for responding to Saudi Arabia’s aggression. The G7 statement explicitly criticizes Iran noting, “We call on Iran to end its arming of and support for the Houthis in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions 1747, 2140 and 2216. Their reprehensible actions constitute a dangerous pattern of escalation that risks further exacerbating the conflict, undermining international trade and creating global economic instability.” Two weeks ago, foreign minister Anita Anand and finance minister François-Philippe Champagne released another statement inverting the aggressor/aggressed relationship declaring, “Canada condemns and calls on Iran to immediately end its destabilizing activities in the Middle East.” Released days before Canada introduced retaliatory tariffs, that statement was designed to placate Trump amidst the trade spat. At the time Carney told CBC that despite breaking off trade talks with the US he continued to speak to Trump about Iran and other international issues. Over the past seven months the Canadian government has released dozens of statements criticizing Iran for responding to the aggression against it by striking neighbours hosting US military facilities. In recent weeks Ottawa has sought to bolster the Gulf monarchies that have become casualties of the US/Israel instigated conflict. Last week Ottawa signed a defence cooperation agreement with Kuwait, a country that had 200 Canadian soldiers stationed there before the recent war. In recent days foreign minister Anita Anand or Prime Minister Carney have discussed regional security with leaders of the UAE, Kuwait and Jordan. After meeting the UAE’s deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, Anand “reiterated Canada’s solidarity with the UAE and Canada has long sold weapons to the Gulf/Arab kingdoms and other Gulf partners in the face of ongoing attacks by Iran and its proxy groups in the region.” Ottawa understands that Iran’s weakening of US and allied military presence has made Kuwait’s monarchy vulnerable to incursions by Iraqi militias while the rulers of Bahrain are hated by the oppressed majority Shia population. In Jordan, which is majority Palestinian, there’s growing opposition to US military installations and the country’s role in defending Israel from Iranian missiles. In Syria the Western -backed Jolani/Al Qaeda forces have faced a wave of protest, and the Saudi kingdom is under pressure from Ansar Allah after it miscalculated by breaking the ceasefire two months ago. Canada should not seek to bolster a weakening colonial legacy, US/Israeli/monarchy-dominated structure in western Asia. And Mark Carney should unequivocally condemn Trump’s genocidal threats against Iran.

.@democracynow recently aired a segment titled: "Architects of Atrocities: Amnesty Says Iran Committed Crimes Against Humanity in 2022 Crackdown." In a 2026 moment where Trump is threatening to wipe out Iran and imposing a crippling siege designed to impoverish the Iranian people, I personally would not make the editorial choice to cover the Iranian govt's alleged crimes in a 2022 crackdown. I think current crimes by our own government are a higher priority. But if you think it's important to cover this Amnesty report on events in 2022, the bare minimum is to at least challenge narratives used to fuel the Trump admin's current sadism. But that didn't happen. DN's guest claimed, among other things, that in January, Iranian "security forces massacred thousands of protesters and bystanders across Iran." There was no mention of the Trump admin taking credit for sparking the protests by targeting Iran's currency, nor of Israeli officials and Mike Pompeo taking credit for arming rioters, who violently attacked security forces and sites across Iran. The segment doesn't even mention the US sanctions that are designed to cause societal implosion. It is derelict to withhold this context from DN's audience.

Is it criminal to call on the Canada Revenue Agency to investigate registered charities violating the Income Tax Act? That seems to be the position of Unapologetically Jewish. On Wednesday, Matthew Taub of Unapologetically Jewish held a press conference on Parliament Hill to attack grassroots activist group Just Peace Advocates (JPA). The opening line in their release says they are “calling on the CRA and RCMP to examine” JPA and Taub repeatedly suggested the anti-genocide group has engaged in some criminality. Taub said that he’d reached out to both the RCMP and US authorities about JPA. An authoritarian genocidal Jewish supremacist, Taub is angry JPA is effectively challenging the Canada to Israel charity pipeline. Around 250 registered charities raise approximately $350 million a year for projects in Israel. Dozens of these groups are violating existing CRA rules by supporting the IOF, racist organizations, municipalities and West Bank colonies (or have poor financial practices). Hundreds of other Canadian-focused Jewish charities promote the Israeli military. Over the past few years JPA has done amazing work raising awareness about Zionist charities. JPA charity researcher Miles Howe has been on CBC and other outlets discussing the subject. He has also spoken on Parliament Hill about Zionist charities. JPA has submitted evidence to the CRA detailing how dozens of charities have violated CRA rules. A series of them have lost their charitable status. Taub and other Zionists are angry and want to insulate genocidal Jewish supremacist charities from CRA rules. To do so Taub is pushing to undercut the CRA’s independence. He called for “parliamentary committees to examine how complaints against charities are assessed, how audits are initiated and whether safeguards exist to prevent regulators from being used as political weapons.” Concurrently, Taub is attacking the messenger. During the presser he repeatedly associated JPA with “terror” organizations. He said the advocacy organization has ties to the Vancouver based grassroots group Samidoun Palestinian Political Prisoners Network, which the Justin Trudeau government outrageously listed as a terrorist organization two years ago (Samidoun was listed for allegedly having ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). Taub also suggested JPA has ties to Hamas. It’s not just Unapologetically Jewish linking JPA to “terrorism” because of its work in exposing the Canada to Israel Charity pipeline. On Tuesday Honest Reporting Canada published “Canadian Accountant Magazine Relies On Just Peace Advocates, A Group Criticized For Defending Two Terrorist Organizations, To Cast Suspicion On Jewish Charity.” Similarly, five days ago NGO Monitor published “Two Weeks of Rage: Meet the NGOs Targeting Jewish Institutions in Canada and Partnering with a Terrorist Organization”. The NGO Monitor report also criticized JPA. Zionists are right to panic about the group leading the fight against Zionist charities in Canada. Large sums are being subsidized by the public. According to charity lawyer Mark Blumberg, 1,000 Jewish charities have $12 billion in assets and most of these groups promote an apartheid state committing genocide. It’s a scandal the public is subsidizing so many groups promoting apartheid. In fact, charitable subsidies are the most significant and odious form of Canadian support for the Jewish supremacist state. It’s imperative to defend Just Peace Advocates from authoritarian Zionists and to work to disrupt the Canada to Israel charity pipeline.
