The IIT Bombay case should not become another campus FIR and another TV debate.
A student is caught using ChatGPT in an exam. The matter then moves into the SC/ST Act. That is not a policy. That is confusion after the fact.
If AI is already how students study, revise, and practise, the exam hall cannot stay in 2012 while the rest of the country lives in 2026.
The government needs a clear clause, not campus-by-campus improvisation.
Say it plainly:
What AI tools are allowed in exams.
Under what conditions.
And whether students from SC/ST backgrounds get a defined accommodation as part of equal opportunity, not as an afterthought once a tragedy has already happened.
The SC/ST Act was meant to prevent humiliation and denial of opportunity. Using it only after an exam-room incident is the weakest possible way to handle this.
Write the rule first. Then enforce it equally. Do not wait for the next FIR to invent the rule.
Undeniable proof in the Sahil Wankode suicide case.
Another CCTV footage emerges where he seems to have been caught with a phone, cheating in exams. He then hands over the phone to the invigilator.
