After my NYSC, my wealthy aunty, a Nigerian politician, called me to come over to her place in Rivers State.
I became her personal PA.
I bathed the kids, took them to school, and ran market errands for her.
Three months passed.
I hadn’t received a single payment.
I called my father, who is her brother, to complain.
“Don’t worry. It’s the connection that matters. You will get it soon.”
So I stayed.
I worked late into the night, typing and editing her speeches and preparing documents for her meetings.
Then Christmas came, and I travelled home.
By mid-January, she expected me to have returned.
I didn’t.
Then she called.
“I have submitted your name to the monthly payroll of my staff.”
I was relieved.
“How much is the salary, ma?”
“₦40,000.”
