Bumper crop of grapes from a vine in the garden. Sweet and juicy and plenty for us and the birds to share. The only soft fruit to have prospered during this scorchingly hot summer

Try figs, David, as I suspect the extraordinary summer weather will repeat.

We do have a fig tree: i was in a pot, sulking. But we have taken the plunge and transferred it to a bed where it has put on lots of growth. Now we just have to protect it from any frosts!
