Newly planted mini cyclamen wilting and falling over? Check for vine weevil larvae pictured here. They eat the roots of many plants and this grower has failed to control this pest before selling them. #horticulture #gardening

Dahlias before the rain. They can flower on and on here until the frost blackens them.

Florence fennel swelling nicely, still 2 weeks behind where they should be due to late summer heat & dry but quality good. Frosts soon so fleecing needed before November. #allotment

I have mulch envy
It’s mulch time again! And the tractors get bigger each year! Digestate from the local AD plant.

Hardy peas to overwinter (risky) & Italian ryegrass cover crop, need some rain to sow them, the ground being still very dry. Light rain at the moment, so perhaps at last? #allotment

Meteorological summer has long finished but with falling temperatures this week we must say goodbye to horticultural summer. No more runner bean flowers (so no more watering, hurray!), but a last flush of the tenderest beans. #allotment

It's that time, summer over, dark mornings, no evening to speak of and still no significant rain; invested £21 in some colchicum bulbs as compensation - that's better.

why use a grant to buy a manufactured tank, this way almost free-circles of tyres held in by old bit fence and with plastic sheet lining holds water from house roof and delivers it by siphon to my veg beds and tunnel
Base going in for another grant funded rainwater harvesting tank. Grant covers around half of the cost but in reality Water Companies should be giving one free to every working farm if they’re really serious about us saving water.

After years of trying my little clump of Sternbergia lutea have come back, a little stronger, for a second year. Possibly the biblical 'lily of the fields'. I do love a geophyte.

Tomato 'Burlesque' crops on into autumn. Firm texture, good flavour, tolerates cool nights better than many tomatoes. Still watering every week. #allotment

Giant veg at Malvern Autumn Show this weekend, but you cannot sit on them. Mighty feats of horticulture all right. Are you tempted to have a go?

Wondrous display of many, many apple cultivars at Malvern Autumn Show from @frankpmatthews all from their orchard field, many new to me. Ones they sell, used to sell or thought better of it I presume. Show runs to Sunday.

Final French beans 'Mistik', a speedy dwarf cultivar, cropping now, mostly lose their colour on cooking, but tasty, after these have gone still a few runner beans before we are back to carrots and cabbage. #allotmemt

Sweetest scent in front garden from Eleagnus flowers, popular with bees too. Never noticed before in 20+ year old hedge growing in partial shade. Perhaps hot sunny summer brought out the flowers. Edible fruits if autumn/winter kind.

At housing design awards Regents Park, I was a judge looking at gardens. Gardens mostly pretty vestigial but some notable exceptions. Much scope for community gardening but limited provision.
