Three years into Israel's genocide in Gaza, the newly launched Gaza Genocide Center is building a permanent, verified record of it, starting with testimonies from survivors.
Its first, recorded in Gaza, is from Somaia El-Swerki. On Dec. 2, 2023, when she was 19, an Israeli airstrike destroyed her family's home in Gaza City. She lay trapped beneath the rubble for 21 days. Her mother died beside her on the seventh day. It's the first in a series of survivor accounts.
The center is led by historian @JehadAbusalim, who is originally from Deir el-Balah and is a PhD candidate in History and Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University.

Father Hugh OβFlaherty, the Irish priest in the Vatican, masterminded the rescue of over 6,500 Jews and Allied servicemen during the German occupation of Rome in WW2.
Operating from Vatican sanctuary, he ran a secret network of safe houses, convents and farms, often slipping out in disguises to dodge the Gestapo, gaining the famous title βthe Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vaticanβ.

'The sound keeps coming back': children maimed in #Ethiopia's #Tigray clashes
Lying on a hospital bed, rolled-up blankets propping up the remains of her legs, 10-year-old double-amputee Iyerusalem is among scores of civilians wounded in northern Ethiopia after fighting erupted last month.

"I was in our compound with my older brother and our horse when we were hit. My brother and the horse died," she told AFP from Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in #Mekelle, capital of the northern Tigray state.
Many of the wounded live in remote villages hours from the hospital along difficult roads where there has been fighting and shelling.
"Right now, my amputated legs hurt badly," said Iyerusalem, who comes from Qarsole village in Alamata district, south of Mekelle.
"If I get medical treatment and can walk again, I want to go back to school," she said, as her father Hiluf watched anxiously.
